Because surgery and rehab are always improving. They said the knee was already at 100% in training camp.

That's amazing if true. Remember when AD came back in what 9 month's? That was beyond medicine.

I don't think we hear much at all on this until Smith is either placed on IR or cleared for practice.

There have been zero technical updates and it seems like the reporters aren't even allowed to ask specific questions.

Pure speculation, but I think the nerve is at least partially firing and dr Jerry will drop a bombshell that Smith is cleared for practice week 6.

I guess I just don't understand this injury. If he can do all that, why can't he play football?
I thought he still had drop foot / drop gait from the fibular nerve damage?? How can someone with that be able to do all of those things?? I don't understand either

Smith says " I'll never rule myself out"...Interesting. What exactly is he talking about. He has never played a game. "Great" college player. So what!!

I don't know the medical answer

But he's not allowed to practice until 10/17 according to league rules..

Maybe come the 17th it's on

Good question. IDK for sure but I'd guess he still has some positive neurological signs and his EMTs are still showing slow conduction velocity. And the player should be able to notice his inability to perform at a certain level.

I'm sitting here wondering the same thing. Granted, i'm not really sure what's going on. They keep waiting for the nerve to "fire" up yet when you read reports they make it seems like he can essentially do any and everything he just needs the nerve to fire up and once it does he will be on the field. That' show he makes it sound but i'm not sure if that's the case.

He's sure smiling a lot in that video, and being coy with answers. I'm thinking some good news for him has either arrived or just around the corner.

Yeah I wonder is there progression there.....he doesn't seem like a guy who's career is over before it starts.

With the drop foot you simply don't have the power and explosion that you would normally have. The Dr that did the surgery said that despite the drop foot he thought Jaylon was athletic enough to play even with drop foot using a brace that helps load the foot. But it would be like a guy playing at much lower than 100%. I think the ultimate goal is for him to get back to the 100% freak he was before trying to get him on the field. At 70%, he might just be another guy.

So only a minor upgrade at MLB.

I like this report although it doesn't add anything. At least he's running and doing drills.
I'm clueless as to what to think regarding his recovery. I'm under the impression that he has to wear a device that enables him to lift his foot. How is he able to run and do drills in a manner that would seem that he's injury free (his approximate words) if he has to wear such a device?
My concern isn't so much that he plays this season as it is that his damaged nerve will degenerate in time for him to play next year. I wonder if we'll ever really know any of this outside of simply waiting for next year's training camp to see whether he's a participant?

There is no increased risk of injury or reinjury. It remains the same for any player's knee.

Yes he will have to be game shape but modern training techniques should help that a lot. He'll still need to ease into the speed of the game but I suspect that won't be a huge problem for him.

I'm not making a prediction just saying if he gets the green light they will have to cut someone or move a player to the PS.
Players that miss offseason training and/or training camp seem to be at increased risk of injury. Scandrick didn't play in the preseason and quickly pulled his hamstring(s). Many believe that Dez made himself prone to injury last season by compensating for being out of shape due to the holdout.

I don't have the stats to show it, but it definitely seems that players are at increased risks of injury when they can't ease into football shape in training camp.

Add to it that he is a young guy that will want to prove himself which makes him more likely to over do it if he is active for a game.

Even if he comes in and is perfectly healthy, he will likely just play special teams this season.

Bottom line is that the upside is getting him for special teams; whereas the downside is an increased risk of injury as compared to a player that participated on training camp.

That seems to be the case for guys at a certain age even late 20's.....he's 21........they should work him in slow if he's able to get out there but I still think its probably next season when we see him. Would be nice to get him out there though.

I got the same impression. Kind of gave me hope for him becoming the player that the team gambled on him becoming.

The only part that worries me about that video, again, is when he says "you should see me run and do drills, you wouldn't even be able to tell I'm injured", if he was being coy, that would be a weird thing to say. I still feel like he's trying to make himself feel better about the injury, moreso than actual improvement in nerve regeneration.

But I'm assuming relying on a brace to help your foot drive off would lead to possible future injury issues (over compensating with other muscles). Playing with a boot would be worst case scenario. Would hate to see him in one.
