Jerry Jones said the Cowboys felt Jay Ratliff had a chance to be the best 3-technique Rod Marinelli has ever had. That's saying something since Warren Sapp just entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as Marinelli's first 3-technique in Tampa.

"Well, Jay’s, of course, his game is always been about effort," Jones said on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM The Fan. "It’s been around hustle. It’s been about what made him really such a good player, because he also has good physical ability. We had really counted on him this year. We thought Jay could come in here and maybe be the best at what they call a 3-technique or it’s a quick-twitch guy there in the middle, and let Rod Marinelli use him. We thought he could be the best that Rod has ever played with."

In an interview with reporters at Valley Ranch on Thursday, Jones alluded to pending legal issues, stemming from the five-year, $40 contract extension Ratliff signed in 2011. The Cowboys released Ratliff last week because of a failed physical. On Wednesday, the doctor who did Ratliff's sports hernia surgery in December medically cleared Ratliff to resume playing this season.

Jones was asked on his radio show if the Cowboys would get cap relief if Ratliff signs with another team.

"The answer, the answer is…. uh, uh, yes," Jones said. "That ultimately it is better for everybody concerned if Jay can go on and play."

Ratliff counts $6.9 million in dead money in 2014.
