Owner Jerry Jones said he believes this year’s Cowboys team is better than last year’s Cowboys team, and he listed out his reasons.
Among them are health, a bunch of young players on defense, particularly at safety, and improvement from second-year cornerback Morris Claiborne.
“We do know more about Barry Church than we did this time last year at the safety position,” Jones said Saturday during the opening press conference of training camp in Oxnard, Calif. “We could and should expect Claiborne to have gotten his rookie year behind him. All of those things, I think, make us a better team.
“But a lot of it has to do with some numbers back there. I like our numbers at the defensive line. We’ve got numbers – now let’s see if we can do it in the offensive line. We’ve got numbers at tight end, we’ve got numbers at receiver. And we’ve got some good backs with numbers. Let’s see what they’ve got.”
Head coach Jason Garrett said he likes the depth of the team, also, and its youth.
“I think we’ve done a good job as an organization getting younger,” he said. “We had to get younger.”
