Give Rod Marinelli and Lovie Smith credit for the Cowboys’ turnover parade, says defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
“That all comes from Chicago and Coach Marinelli, with Lovie and those guys,” Kiffin said after the Cowboys got six takeaways against the New York Giants on Sunday night. “We have some signs up in our room and things like that. We talk about it a lot. You have to talk about it. You have to practice it, so that was pretty neat.”
Marinelli was the defensive coordinator in Chicago last season, when the Bears produced 44 takeaways. He was part of Lovie Smith’s staff, and Smith – fired at the end of the season – was in AT&T Stadium to watch his former staffer produce the same results with the Cowboys.
Marinelli had to work with a patchwork defensive line as the Cowboys used almost every hand they could find to work around injuries to defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and defensive ends Anthony Spencer, Tyrone Crawford and Ben Bass.
“I think Coach Marinelli did a great job,” Kiffin said. “Of course, it starts with the players. He’ll tell you the same thing. We were moving some guys in and out and this and that. We had a lot of new guys. Hardly got to know them.”
