Sean Lee is not going to meet his goal of being healthy for all 16 games. The Cowboys’ leading tackler, along with his backup, Justin Durant, will miss three to four weeks with a hamstring injury, a team source confirmed Monday.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones said in a radio interview that Lee’s injury would be “more than one or two weeks.”
Lee is the Cowboys’ leading tackler, with 112 coming in, and also leads in interceptions, four. He was hurt on the first play of the Saints’ first series Sunday night and missed the rest of the game.
“Extremely frustrating,” he said Sunday night. “For me, not being out there, I feel I’m letting people down, letting teammates down, letting the team down. Have to find a way – I’ve talked about it before – to stay on this football field. The only positive from a personal standpoint is I’ll be back from this. I’ll be healthy at some point pretty quick.”
Lee missed a game with a hand injury in 2011 and missed 10 games last year with a broken toe. He missed two games with a hamstring injury as a rookie. He was rehabbing a knee injury when the Cowboys drafted him in 2010.
“I don’t want to miss any games,” he said. “I want to be out there as much as I can. But I try to do everything I can off the field to control it. it’s one of those deals where you have to find a way to overcome it and come back. That’s the only thought, is that I will be able to come back.”
Durant replaced Lee in the base defense before leaving with his hamstring injury. Ernie Sims, Kyle Bosworth and Cameron Lawrence were left to play alongside Bruce Carter, but nothing slowed down the Saints, who rolled up 625 yards and an NFL record 40 first downs.
