Coach Jason Garrett opened training camp saying the Cowboys not only need to run it better than they did last year but also they need to run it more.
That goes without saying considering the Cowboys set team records for fewest yards and fewest attempts in 2012.
Running back DeMarco Murray is excited about the possible renewed commitment to the running back but prefers to take the wait-and-see approach. His 663 yards rushing last year were the fewest for a Cowboys leading rusher in 23 years.
"You get excited," said Murray when asked about Garrett's plan to run it more. "But we have to see what happens. As a running back you definitely love to have the ball and love to run it. But we will have to see how the games go."
That the Cowboys fell behind in so many games last year is one reason they had to abandon the run, leading to their low numbers.
When Murray does get the ball this year, it will be in a one-back, two-tight end alignment. The Cowboys no longer have a fullback on the roster.
Although he liked fullback Lawrence Vickers, who was released two weeks ago, Murray said he is excited to run out of the one-back set because of the extra running room.
"It's something I'm looking forward to," Murray said. "I know Vick was a great fullback and I wish him the best. It was a tough deal but this is something I look forward to more. When you get guys spread out, its going to be hard for them to have seven or eight guys in the fox so its going to open a lot of running lanes."
The end result, according to Murray will be the best and most complete season of his career.
Minnesota Vikings running Adrian Peterson, who played with Murray in college at Oklahoma, recently remarked that the Cowboys have yet to see the best of his former teammate.
Murray agreed, saying that saying that happen in 2013.
"This year is going to be a great year for me," Murray said. "I'm coming in prepared physically, mentally and emotionally. I'm definitely ready. So I'm excited about this year and what we are going to do."
