Asked where the Cowboys have improved from a year ago, coach Jason Garrett pointed out three areas: maturity, defensive scheme and strength in the middle of the offensive line.
“Hopefully we’re better on defense,” Garrett said Monday in his daily press conference at Valley Ranch. “Hoping the guys are more mature, they’ve embraced the defensive system, young guys have come in and can contribute, and we’ll just play better defense across the board. We’ll see how all that plays out.”
In the offensive line, Garrett said the improvement starts with the drafting of rookie center Travis Frederick.
“He’s been a Minute One starter for us,” Garrett said. “He’s done a good job. I feel like we’re stronger up front than we’ve been in probably the last three years, and that’s a good thing for your football team. He’s a big reason for that. Hopefully, adding a guy like Ron Leary or some of the other guys who have been on our football team, that’s all going to help us.”
Garrett also likes how the team has responded to experience gained.
“We’re just better from a result of that,” he said. “We learn from good things, and we learn from things that didn’t go quite so well. We got better just because of the approach we’ve taken in response to that.”
