Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick signed a two-year contract extension through the 2018 season, according to a multiple sources.
Scandrick, who has had his best season in his six seasons since the Cowboys drafted him, gets $9 million more in guarantees. Scandrick signed a six-year, $28.2 million deal, with $10 million guaranteed, in 2011.
According to a source, the deal gives Scandrick guaranteed money and the security of knowing he will be on the team next three years while it gives the Cowboys a chance to get some badly-needed cap relief over the next two years.
Scandrick had $1 million added to his base salary in 2014, upping it to $4.5 million. The Cowboys the ability to turn that into signing bonus and bring down his cap number for 2014.
His base salary in 2014 has been lowered from $5 million to $3 million, which also helps the Cowboys against the cap.
When the dust settles with all the guaranteed in place, Scanrick will have received $21.7 million from Aug. 2011 through 2016.
Scandrick, who replaced Morris Claiborne in the starting lineup Week 2, has been the team's best cornerback in 2013.
He has started 12 games this season, posting career highs in tackles (59), passes defensed (14) and interceptions (2).
