Tony Romo is the fourth-rated passer in the league, but so far, that has gotten the Cowboys only a 2-2 record.

It pains owner Jerry Jones, who has hated to waste good years from Romo on non-playoff teams, to think about that.

“You can be a hell of a passer, now, and still not win these games,” Jones said on KRLD 105.3 FM “The Fan” on Tuesday in his weekly radio appearance. “You can be a heck of a quarterback and not win them. … By all accounts, (Rivers) is a top quarterback out there in San Diego, and yet, they had won one out of three. You’ve got to have a lot of things going for you. It’s obviously a lot of people involved that lost the game out there the other day for the Cowboys, and we’ve got to get them going in the right direction.”

Romo put up a 108.4 quarterback rating in the 31-20 loss to the Chargers. He has a 105.0 rating for the season, which ranks behind only Peyton Manning’s 138.0, Rivers’ 118.8 and Aaron Rodgers’ 105.1.

Manning is undefeated, yet Rivers, Romo and Rodgers are a combined 5-6. The fifth-rated quarterback, Drew Brees of the Saints, is 4-0.

Jones said Romo is playing well, and he’s getting time to make throws. But he lamented the drops that short-circuited drives against the Chargers.

“I thought we’d catch our balls the other day,” Jones said. “We had some drops. Not blaming the game on drops, but we catch the balls that we had a chance to catch the other day, we get a little more out of our run here or there that we had a chance to do the other day. … We’ve just got to make the plays. Now, Jason said it pretty well – when you get in a game like that, and you’re not throwing 35 times, you’ve got to make the catches if they’re in there to catch.”
