Defensive end George Selvie said he didn’t believe he had to do extra with DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher nearly shut out on the stat sheet against the Packers, but he hopes he has more big plays in the next two games.
“The last three games, I hardly made any plays, and Hatcher and D-Ware made plays,” he said. “We need to get out there as a defense, as defensive linemen, and make plays together. That’s when we’ll be our best.”
Selvie broke a four-game sackless streak with a sack to end the first quarter Sunday, his seventh of the season. He had six tackles, two tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry, although he hyperextended his back.
“The defense is an attack front,” he said. “As a defensive line, we’re attacking right there, trying to strip balls and get turnovers and stuff like that. That’s the defense we’ve played all year, so that’s what we’re going to keep on doing.”
Selvie said the injuries on the defense are costing valuable players, but he said he himself is an example of how it can be turned into a positive.
“When somebody goes down, the next man has got to be up,” he said. “Just like with Spence. They called me up. I just had to be the next man up, and I tried to play my hardest and try to feel like a starter and be the best I can be.”
Selvie said it is not hard to keep believing in a good outcome for the season, despite Sunday’s loss.
“It’s not tough at all,” he said. “Everybody just has to realize what position we’re in. We’ve still got a chance to go to the playoffs. We’ve got two games, two teams we’ve already played and we won. But we know we’ve got to go out there and do it again. So we’ve just got to go out there and play like we played the last time we played those guys.
“You just got to go out there and fight every week. We still got something to play for, and that’s what everybody has to realize.”
