Anthony Spencer missed practice Thursday, leaving only Friday as a possible practice day for the defensive end as the Cowboys prepare for the season opener against the New York Giants on Sunday night.

The Cowboys have not ruled him out, but Spencer is not likely to play Sunday even if he got some work in on Friday. He has not practiced since knee surgery on July 25, the first week of training camp, so he would have to be going into a game with a day's practice or less.

"He’s been doing stuff over the last few days to get himself closer to playing," coach Jason Garrett said Thursday. "His rehab has less to do with yesterday’s practice as much as it does what he’s been doing for the last four or five weeks to get himself ready to play. We’re hopeful again he’s going to do something today, and we’ll see how he does."

Spencer did come out to the practice field to the rehab group just as the open period of practice was ending.

The Cowboys also practiced without running back Lance Dunbar and safety Danny McCray.
