Tyron Smith did it. The left tackle admits he held Lions defensive end Devin Taylor, which stopped the clock with 1:07 remaining even though Detroit declined the penalty.

"It was a tug," Smith said Wednesday. "It's a technique issue, but I have to clean up that mistake and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Instead of the clock running down to inside 30 seconds after Dan Bailey's 44-yard field goal, Detroit got the ball back with 1:02 left. It was more than enough time for the Lions to drive 80 yards for the winning score.

Smith has been called for three holding penalties this season, with two declined.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett called the hold a big play in the game, but he also implicated running back Phillip Tanner. The play called for Tanner to run up the middle, but he bounced it outside to Smith's side, putting Smith in a position where he committed the penalty.

Tanner, though, said he was just "trying to make a play."

"From what I saw, if I was going to go straight, I would’ve ran straight into the back of the linemen," Tanner said Wednesday. "So I was just trying to make a play.

"It’s instincts. It's out there. Just trying to make a play. If we get the first down, we win the ball game."'
