Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox is home tending to a family illness, and the Cowboys are leaving it up to him on when he gets back.
Cowboys radio announcer Brad Sham tweeted that Wilcox’s mother is “gravely ill.” Former Cowboys receiver Jesse Holley tweeted well wishes for Wilcox.
Coach Jason Garrett did not volunteer during his daily press conference Sunday that Wilcox would be absent.
But he did say that Wilcox was improved over the first preseason game.
“Better. A lot better. A lot better running on kickoffs,” Garrett said. “He looked more comfortable out there on defense. He was running to the football, tackled well, obviously he made that big play in the ballgame. He has very good instincts. He’s very aware of what’s going on as a player on the backend for a guy who hasn’t played that much safety in his life. He did that a lot in the spring. He made a lot of those same kinds of plays. He’s a good football player who is going to get better.”
