The Cowboys signed quarterback Caleb Hanie to a one-year contract Wednesday, according to a source.
With Kyle Orton’s status in limbo, the Cowboys needed another arm for their off-season program. Starter Tony Romo is limited after coming off back surgery Dec. 27 to repair a herniated disk. The Cowboys covered themselves by signing veteran Brandon Weeden last month.
But Orton surprised the team by skipping the voluntary workouts this week. That precipitated the Cowboys’ need for another quarterback, though they still hope Orton returns to back up Romo in 2014.
Hanie, 28, worked out for the Cowboys on Wednesday. He was born in Dallas and graduated from high school in Forney. Hanie has kept in shape working out in the area.
He briefly was with the Cleveland Browns last season. He also has been a backup in Chicago and Denver, playing in 10 games with four starts.
