Cowboys' History of First-Round Trades
Often Active in Opening Day Swapfest

Throughout their NFL draft history, the Cowboys have been very active in constructing first-round trades. Dallas enters the 2008 draft with the 22nd and 28th overall picks and has ample bargaining power to maneuver in or out of the opening round.
Below is Dallas' history of first-round deals:
1961: Traded first of two first-round picks to Washington (along with a sixth-round choice) for QB Eddie LeBaron. The Cowboys' remaining first-round pick, which was obtained from Cleveland in exchange for Dallas' first-round pick in 1962, was used on DT Bob Lilly of TCU.
1962: No first-round selection; pick was traded to Cleveland in 1961 for No. 13 overall pick in 1961 (Bob Lilly).
1967: No first-round selection: traded along with second-round and two fifth-round picks to Houston for Ralph Neely.
1974: The overall No. One pick used on Ed "Too Tall" Jones was obtained from Houston in a trade for Tody Smith and Billy Parks.
1975: The overall No. Two pick used on Randy White was obtained from the N.Y. Giants in a trade for QB Craig Morton.
1977: The overall No. Two pick used on Tony Dorsett was obtained from Seattle in a trade for the Cowboys' first-round pick and three second-round picks.
1980: No first-round selection; traded first-round pick plus a second-round pick to Baltimore for DL John Dutton.
1986: Swapped first-round picks with San Francisco. Obtained the 49ers' No. 18 overall pick (used by Cowboys on WR Mike Sherrard) in exchange for the Cowboys' overall No. 21 pick plus a fifth-round pick.
1990: The Cowboys would have selected overall No. One in 1990, but Dallas already used its first-round pick to select QB Steve Walsh in the 1989 supplemental draft. The Cowboys traded, however, for an additional first-round pick in 1980 (No. 17 overall). That pick was obtained from Pittsburgh for a first-round draft choice obtained from Minnesota and third-round choice obtained from San Francisco. The player selected with that overall No. 17 pick was running back Emmitt Smith.
1991: The Cowboys had the overall No. One pick (used on DT Russell Maryland) through a trade with New England for a first-round choice obtained from Minnesota, as well as a second-round choice, plus players Ron Francis, David Howard, and Eugene Lockhart.
1992: The Cowboys obtained the No. 17 overall pick (used on CB Kevin Smith) and a fifth-round pick from Atlanta in exchange for first-round and fourth-round choices obtained from New England.
1993: The Cowboys would have drafted No. 28 overall following their Super Bowl win, but traded that pick along with their fourth-round choice to Green Bay for two second-round picks plus a fourth-round pick and eighth-round pick. The two second-round picks from Green Bay were used by the Cowboys on WR Kevin Williams and LB Darrin Smith. The fourth-round pick from Green Bay was used on RB Derrick Lassic, and the eighth-round pick on S Reggie Givens.
1994: The Cowboys would have drafted No. 28 overall following their second consecutive Super Bowl win, but traded that pick along with their second-round choice to San Francisco in exchange for the 49ers' first round pick (No. 23 overall, used on DE Shante Carver) and a seventh-round pick.
1995: The Cowboys would have drafted No. 28 overall, but traded the choice to Tampa Bay for two second-round picks.
1996: The Cowboys traded their first-round selection (No. 30 overall) to Washington for the Commanders' second-round and third-round picks. The Cowboys used those picks from Washington to selected DE Kavika Pittman in the second-round and C Clay Shiver in the third round.
1997: The Cowboys traded the overall No. 25 pick (plus their 1997 fifth-round pick and 1998 third-round pick) to Philadelphia for the Eagles' overall No. 22 pick. The Cowboys selected TE David LaFleur with that overall No. 22 pick in 1997.
1999: The Cowboys traded their first-round pick (No. 22 overall) and their fifth-round compensatory pick (obtained from Carolina as compensation for the signing of WR Patrick Jeffers) to Seattle for the Seahawks' first-round pick (No. 20 overall). In moving up two slots from No. 22 overall to No. 20, the Cowboys selected DE Ebenezer Ekuban.
2000: The Cowboys had no first-round pick. They traded the pick (which would have been No. 19 overall) along with their 2001 first-round pick to Seattle for WR Joey Galloway.
2001: The Cowboys had no first-round pick for the second-consecutive season. The pick (No. Seven overall) was traded the previous year to Seattle for WR Joey Galloway.
2002: The Cowboys traded their first-round selection (No. Six overall) to Kansas City for the Chiefs' first-round pick (No. Eight overall) and third-round pick, as well as the Chiefs' sixth-round pick in 2003. The Cowboys moved down two slots (from No. Six to No. Eight overall) in the first round and selected S Roy Williams. The sixth-round pick in 2003 obtained from the Chiefs was used on WR Zuriel Smith.
2004: The Cowboys traded their first-round pick (No. 22 overall) to Buffalo for the Bills' second-round and fifth-round choices in 2004, plus the Bills' first-round choice in 2005. The Cowboys used the Bills' second-round pick on RB Julius Jones, and fifth-round pick on TE Sean Ryan.
2005: The Cowboys used the first-round pick obtained from Buffalo in 2004 on DE Marcus Spears (No. 20 overall).
2007: The Cowboys traded their first-round choice (No. 22 overall) to Cleveland in exchange for Cleveland's second-round choice in 2007, plus the Browns' first-round choice in 2008. The Cowboys then moved back into the first round by trading the second-round pick obtained by Cleveland, along with Dallas' third-round and fifth-round picks, to Philadelphia in exchange for the Eagles' first-round pick (No. 26 overall). The Cowboys used the pick from the Eagles to select LB Anthony Spencer.
