Staubach recalls when Landry installed shotgun for Cowboys

All these years later, Roger Staubach remembers quite clearly what his initial reaction was when Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry approached him about making the shotgun formation a recurring feature of their offense.

"I thought he was crazy or something," the former quarterback said with a snicker during a telephone interview this week. "I mean, we're talking about 1975. Nobody used the shotgun."

C'mon, they've been carrying shotguns in Texas for the longest...but things do change on a ball field. The shotgun was made for Staubach...

Everybody uses it now! Ole Tom was a football genius. Imagine, he created so many offensive gimmicks and staples and was really a hardcore Defensive thinker. What a man!

"shotgun"
"3rd-down back"
"Hail Mary"

Most younger people don't realize that nobody was using those terms, at least not as they related to football, going into the 1975 season. Such was the impact of Landry and Staubach.

reminded me of Preston Pearson - great and original "3rd-down back". great at getting that 1st down

I wish there was more meat to the article. Landry was a fascinating man.

Very true and you will not see it again.

That era of the Cowboys were so ahead of everyone else it wasn't funny.

The only next true innovator was Bill Walsh.

I think people wrongly believe innovation is done in football. That there's nothing new that can or should be tried.

Cutting edge. Trend setting. Inovation.

Dallas Cowboys.
Good times.
Me mum recalls how some smirked and tried to minimize it.
Revolutionary!
And bring back the Landry shuffle, you know blokes when the O line stands up and realigns before the snap. I would always interrupt me baby nursing to see that!

Hard to believe but the 4-3 wasn't really a big thing before Landry and his flex version of it. The shovel pass he worked up could be devastating.
You are making me appreciate the old coot even more!
Too bad his drafting largely failed him in the end.

Like article mentioned, Landry did not invent the shotgun formation, he perfected and popularized it.

Those were the days, my friends! Landry was so innovative when it came to conjuring up ways to win that others didn't dare use. ;)

The pairing of Tom Landry and Roger Staubach was just a match made in heaven, even though they didn't always agree on things.
