Agent for Steelers LB Harrison Says Client and Team Not Close on New Deal

Posted by Matt Loede under Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers and NFL MVP linebacker James Harrison are not close on a new deal according to an article today on ESPN that quotes Harrison’s agent - Bill Parise.

“We’re talking and meeting pretty regularly, almost daily, but we’re having a difficult time getting to where we need to be,” Parise said on the site. “I would say talks are progressing but not necessarily yielding the results that we would expect.”

The team wants to get Harrison locked up now, this even though he’s not due to hit the free agent market till after the 2010 season. He’s one of a number of Steelers that will be a free agent after 2010. Hines Ward is included on that list as well.

Back to Harrison, the article says that length of a new deal is not the primary issue, as the deal would be in the range of five to six years. But the two sides are far apart when it comes to the all-mighty dollar, and how it would be distributed over the length of the contract.

“I think the Steelers are trying to get a deal done, too,” Parise said. “It’s just right now we’re not close.”

Harrison had 101 tackles, 16 sacks and seven forced fumbles for the Super Bowl champs last season.

Harrison and Ware saw how much Fat Albert got paid and they are going to want the same if not more.

Jerry will pay Ware, probably $120 million range, $40-$50 million guaranteed.

Noway in hell the cheap arse Steelers are going to drop that type of coin on Harrison, just aint going to happen. They are either going to let him walk after 2010 or they are going to trade his arse.

Rooney never gives out mega-deals, they usually let their big ticket free agents walk. (see Fanaca and Plexico).

Harrison's a real good player, but I don't blame the Steelers for balking a bit here. They're able to produce high quality OLBs at will, and Harrison is 30ish with only one or two good seasons under his belt. Not the kind of guy you invest $80 million in, IMO.

1 player in how many years of free agecny???

When free agency started back in the day, Rooney was inteviewed and he said that he would rely on "loyalty" to keep players in Pitt instead of money.

With only a couple of exceptions, Rooney has kept his word.

I don't think Jerry will have to drop that kind of money on Ware.

I said it before Newman signed and I think it holds true for Ware too.

Jerry will give him a deal that looks like it is worth less than what those other idiots are getting but by the time it is all said and done, Ware will have earned more.

We all know Haynesworth's deal is really only 4 years, 48 million with all that extra money being nothing more than bragging rights.

I expect to see Ware get a big deal. No way do I expect to see $120 million.

I think he will get a 6 year deal for 70-80 million. Difference being, he will play out the majority of that contract and get a whole lot more than Haynesworth. I guess the reason Albert went for the short deal is so he can try to cash in again. He'll be 31 going on 32 next time around and I guess hes hoping the market will be a little nicer to an 11 year vet. I don't see it happening.

I hope you are correct about Ware taking less. As for Fat Albert, he wanted that $41 million guaranteed.

Washington was apparently the only team willing to give it to him.

Cause Washington was the only team willing to bank on the idea that the last two seasons were the real Albert and not his first 5 seasons when he was average at best.

I'm hoping, obviously, that their investment finds the guy who played for the first 4 or 5 years and not the one who played the last two.

And Ben is a QB, a position they'd struggled to fill sufficently over the years, and not a LB a position that they churn out more often than Denver does runningbacks.

Two huge differences.

The Harrison talks are ones that should be closely watched though cause this is where you'll see the general idea of where Ware is going to wind up being for Dallas.

I'm sure Jerry would prefer to get Ware's deal done before Harrison's :laugh2:

I hope he signs after Ware and they make him the highest paid defensive player in the league. Love it when players each huge amounts of cap money on teams I hate. :D

I'm sure Jerry would too but I'm sure that Ware's agent realises that waiting to see what Harrison gets is a benefit to him and his client cause he can then point to that deal, along with Alberts, and say "We need more than these two."

I'm sure Haynesworth's contract set the bar just fine for Ware at $15M+ a year and over $42M in guaranteed money. The Steelers aren't likely going to close a deal with Harrison anytime soon. It's in Ware's best interest to close a deal now than later for protection reasons.

*nods* I could see that. I'm certainly not saying I have the answers, or anything, because I'm not in the shoes of any of the people that this deal actually effects. I just wouldn't be shocked to see them ride it out to see what Harrison gets or to at least hear some rumors of the ball park area that Harrison will be signing in.
