Steelers Sign Free Agent Running Back Mewelde Moore

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers signed free agent running back Mewelde Moore to a three-year contract, the team announced today. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Moore (5-11, 209) spent the first four seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings after the team drafted him in the fourth round (119th overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Tulane. He has played in 54 career games, including 11 starts, as both a running back and kickoff and punt returner.

For his career, Moore has 1,285 rushing yards on 264 attempts (4.9 avg.) with one rushing touchdown. He also has 116 receptions for 1,093 yards (9.4 avg.) with three touchdowns. As a returner, Moore has returned 74 punts for 768 yards (10.4 avg.) with two touchdowns and 26 kickoffs for 503 yards (19.3 avg.).

Moore enjoyed his best season as a Viking in 2005 as he rushed 155 times for 662 yards (4.3 avg.) with one touchdown. He also caught 37 passes for 339 yards (9.2 avg.) with two touchdowns that same year while returning a punt 71 yards for a touchdown.

Well crap, that's one FA running back I actually would have liked to see us go after.

$4.95 Million for 3 years.

That's very affordable, he would have taken that here, Jerry could have probably talked him down to less. :laugh2:

Same here...Wonder if Jerry has or had a plan about the RB situation that didn't involve giving away the farm for McFadden...Could it really be Dunn they were thinking of?

Liked Moore, though...Thought he could've been a good compliment to Barber

I think they are gonna draft a guy and get another guy off the practice squad or post-draft FA.

I see no reason to bring Dunn in.

I'm not sure what JJ has in plan for the RB position. I thought Moore would be a decent fit. With respect to Dunn, here are some pluses and minuses.

Here are some of the positives with Dunn
1. Leadership qualities
2. Good WR out of backfield
3. Probably does not stop JJ from drafting a younger RB fairly early.

Negatives include
1. Age, he will prob only play for another year or two
2. How much has he slowed down over the last year?
and
3. Don't we really need our 3rd RB (guessing Dunn would be our 3rd RB) to play on ST?

A guy like R Cartwright could play on ST, but he's not nearly as accomplished as Dunn, of course, with respect to other facets of the game.

Tough call . . . .

But if Dunn is basically replacing TT, and we still draft a RB fairly high, I guess that's o.k.

I like some of the things Moore brings to the table... Capable runner, good out of backfield catching the ball.
However, the knock on him was blocking. Not that he had trouble with it, but he refused to block. Once word gets out, teams blitz when guy's like this are on the field, and QB's get killed.
Again, a BIG difference between not good and won't. This keeps many talented runners on the bench. Norwood in Atlanta the Williams guy in Carolina. Both talented with the ball in their hands, but they'll have your QB looking out of his ear-hole when they don't get it.

With that in consideration, I'm OK with us passing. I'd actually would be suspecious of our talent eval if we did pick him up.

I am surprised we didnt at least have him in for an interview.

I guess it is starting to become obvious we are going to get RB help through the draft.
