Step Up

Just some guys that I hope to see step up this season... something we definitely need in order to be competitive. I'm tired of all of these guys with so much potential that never show up.

Patrick Crayton (WR)- I need to see some promise in the future of Dallas' receiver core. I like what we currently have but we all know that our 1 and 2 WR don't have but so many years left. I hate feeling like the future of our passing game still haven't become Cowboys and are currently in college somewhere. I'm quite sure our next star #1 guy is yet to be drafted but a solid talent at the #2 would be comforting. I have a good feeling about Crayton and I hope he proves me right.

Jacob Rogers (RT)- Somebody... anybody... please step up at RT. This position is so important to the success of Julius, Bledsoe as well, and thus the overall success of the Cowboys. Rogers is the highest drafted guy in line to win the position and has been spoken well of lately. I'd rather someone larger earn the spot like Petitti but he is so new that he will require at least another year to be the solution.

Keith Davis (FS)- I don't care if he does make a better SS. We have one of the best SS. We need a FS and I love what Davis has brought to Special Teams. I've been pulling for this kid since this time last year and I see great things. I do not want to see some mediocre veteran brought in to solve the position and that is most likely what will happen. I can easily see someone like Izell Reese (not him necessarily but someone similar) end up having the job. Sure they'll be more solid and consistent but not star potential. I want a ballhawk, game changer. Davis seems to be just that. But he has to convince that he is more valuable on defense than Special Teams. How nasty would our Secondary be with Roy Williams, Keith Davis, Terrence Newman, Ant Henry and Aaron Glenn? As nasty as they wanna be IMO.

Bradie James (ILB)- This guy has been lingering around for years. Never stepping up, never going away. He got his chance last season and came up short. I'm hoping a 3-4 plays to his strengths and it's been a long time since we have had a big, He-Man on the inside. I hate to think he was a waste of a high draft pick like so many others have proven to be.

Tyson Thompson (KR/PR)- Lee did a great job returning kicks last season. But he's gone. I want someone to show that he won't be missed. And I don't think Lee, although productive, had much "go house" potential. We are due for a return TD or 2 this year, at least. I think Thompson could be the one to do it. He sounds like a fast and potentially talented RB and in order for him to make the roster he will have to contribute significantly on ST. I'd hate to try to pass him through waivers for the Practice Squad and risk losing him.

Drew Bledsoe (QB)- At one time, this guy was a badass. The past few years, he has looked just short of poor. Okay, at times he has been nothing but poor. But he has plenty of experience, drive and ability. We NEED a good QB, if only for a season or two until we start grooming someone else. This team can not afford to rely entirely upon Julius or he will crumble and so will we. I think if he steps up, he can be one of the best QBs in the NFC, maybe even the league.

Roy Williams (SS)- If Roy can step up and get back to form, he can dominate. As a last line of defense, there is no better as long as he gets to play his game. I can't help but think we are on the brink of his best season yet. Feared across the league, he can make major improvements on our defense, singlehandedly.

Terrence Newman (CB)- Let's see that shut down ability he was drafted for. I don't fault him for his slump last year and I'm not worried about him. But he needs to step up and make some QBs look the other way.

Patrick Crayton is a low round draft choice with limited receiver experience, so the odds are better that he fails rather than succeeds. He may never step up to be a #2 receiver much less a #1. I would be happy if Crayton just stepped up into the role that Kelvin Martin filled so well. A reliable punt and kick returner and a good #3 receiver. Those are needed, too. I wish Parcells would just stick him back there to return punts instead of trying everyone, but him.

If Crayton = Kelvin Martin, we are in much better shape than any of us imagened

You know I really hope Jacob steps up and outright wins the job as it seems by reports he is doing.

However the one thing that worries me about the guy is that he has a history of shoulder (I think it is shoulder) injuries and unless he gets beyond that we need to have the guy waiting in the wings to be just as good or darn close to it.

We havent had a great kick returner since Herschal Walker in the late 90s(Swinton was good, but only for a season). If Thompson can step it up, it would be HUGE for us.

Burnett - Step up! I don't want to see just another LB that is solid and afraid to make plays. Keep that cocky bravado and surplant Singleton at OLB. I don't care if we do go young at our LB core. Its a new defense that everybody is learning, so why not get fresh legs to learn the position if everyone is going to make mistakes anyway.

Hey Qwickdraw,

Where you been? Haven't seen you around these parts lately! Good to see you!

Good post. I agree that we need to see a young receiver step up and someone at RT. The reports coming out about Jacob Rogers are extremely encouraging!! Sounds like the Rivera signing is paying big dividends before we've even played a game.
