I hate the PUP rules. It has always seemed wacky to me that a player that gets injured in training camp can't go on the PUP. Even if they could just go on it for a couple of weeks it would be really helpful because spots almost always open up after a couple of weeks into the season. There's a high probability that there are going to be injured players in training camp because it's a multiple week process. I realize that the 7 inactive players on game day are basically the short term IR, but there are going to be a lot more injuries in the many weeks of the preseason than there will be from 1 week to the next week in the regular season. It just creates this silly cycle where teams train players in their systems all off-season and then that player gets claimed by another team. Then the next week the team that lost a player to waivers ends up signing another player off waivers from another team and the process just keeps repeating and the players keep getting moved from one scheme to the next and one coaching staff to the next.

Another good post. And I agree. They want teams to not stash players, but with the number of soft tissue injuries in football, it really hurts the game overall to have so few slots to work with when guys start dropping.

Cut him with an injury settlement contingent on passing a physical before TC next year. An injury settlement can be adaptable.

How much would that cost? I know his salary now. But how do injury settlements work...if you know?

If they want to put Johnson on IR, I don't see the big deal. It's not our money nor does in any way does it limit the Cowboys roster.

I could be wrong, but I thought he would have to make the 53 before they put him on IR. That means that they would have to expose another player to waivers before putting Johnson on waivers and bringing back the other player. With as much concern as I have seen about exposing players like Vaughan to waivers, it could be a somewhat harmful move. Other than that (or if I am wrong), I am fine with giving him one last chance to get his hamstring issues worked out before giving up on him.

They can put guys on IR at any point. Ben Malena, Sean Lee and Korey Lindsey have all been put on IR (so far) this season.

And some like Malena and Lindsey were cut with injury settlements thereafter.

Stephen Jones: Dallas Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer ‘ahead of schedule’ in rehab; PUP decision TBD

By Rainer Sabin

The Cowboys, at this point, seem optimistic Spencer can contribute sooner rather than later. And a source close to 30-year-old believes the Cowboys are leaning towards putting Spencer on the active roster for Week 1 even if he is not available to play against San Francisco. After all, keeping Spencer on PUP would mean he wouldn’t be eligible to play until Oct. 19 against the New York Giants.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Spencer is “ahead of schedule” in his rehabilitation.
Asked if he was surprised by the speed of Spencer’s recovery, Jones responded, “No. I would never underestimate Spencer. He’s a professional athlete. He’s a pro. Football is important to him and he knows he can get back and play at a high level. And if and when he does it will be a huge boost for us.”

Did we not hear the almost identical thing last season and he missed the opener and then limped through the KC game before being shut down?

Good work if you can get it

That's what happens when you're big, strong, fast and have a proficiency in the sport.

It is good work if you can get it.

The other day I was thinking about all the kids in our area that play the major sports, are standouts and never get to the "big leagues" in any of the sports. Competition at the pro level is just ridiculous.

No doubt it took some detective work to find the very small bad spot on the knee.

Spencer had a knee scope in 2008 and I'm sure the thinking was that another scope was the worst that was needed last offseason.

I think there is something to lose, the integrity of locker room (I just made up that term). Seriously though, giving this type of special treatment to an individual who has literally done NOTHING for this organization could rub some players the wrong way. Isn't this one of the big cultural problems Crayton was talking about a few months ago.

Only it prolongs the "will he actually play, yuh know if he does he is really really good" dialogue to continue yet another season.

It also gives them the illusion that "if" he returns the safety position might be okay.

They need to understand how bankrupt that position is, not continue to cross their fingers.

I have never seen anything like what he is suggesting. Three consecutive years on IR for what are not really crippling injuries. He flips a hamstring here or there and nobody can figure out why.

Even if it was a first round choice, anyone recall that happening? I cannot.

Following the Herchel Walker trade...second rounder, Jimmy Smith was taken just before Darren Woodson, and ended up unable to play and improve for three seasons. He was then waived and became an all Pro.

That was after drafting Michael Irvin, and then Alvin Harper in the 1st round in 1991.

The team's top picks in 1990 were: Emmitt Smith, and then WR Alexander Wright in the 2nd round.

The top picks in 1991 were:
1 - DT Russell Maryland; WR Alvin Harper; DT Kelvin Pritchett
2 - LB Dixon Edwards
3 - LB Godfrey Miles; OG James Richards; OT Erik Williams *(7th rd Leon Lett)

The top picks in 1992 were:
1 - CB Kevin Smith; LB Kevin Jones
2 - WR Jimmy Smith; S Darren Woodson

Or....it's possible the exact opposite it true. Everyone knows Jerry is loyal to a fault and this just proves what he will do for someone who has had their struggles. Couldn't that impress the players?

He does not count as a roster spot if he goes on IR. He does now though.
