Different philosophies now. Notice they have been trying to get out of that contract the last two years.

They have not been trying hard enough. So either they don't want out bad enough, or they simply are lazy and don't want to admit what an incredible mistake that was.

That said, I am glad they have elected to not expose themselves to that temptation again.

Sure, but who really is a lock down corner these days? Like you said, Norman came out of nowhere. Is he that good or was the front-7 that good? Put an elite front-7 in front of a guy like Scandrick and he'll be a top CB.

Lockdown corner is a term loosely used but Norman would be the closest we've had in years at least based on last season. The problem is he came out of nowhere and I find it strange the Panthers rescinded the franchise tag on him. Scandrick is coming off a serious knee injury and at 29 he's reached his ceiling he'll never become a "top" corner. He's solid and hopefully he remains that way.

Lets see how Norman plays after he gets paid. He knows this will likely be his last big payday so of course he's going to the highest bidder. I'm just glad it won't be Dallas.....

The beauty and GUTS in all of this is that the Panthers looked this star in the eyes, saw what he was demanding, and said to him: take a hike.

The Cowboys on the other hand would have wrung their hands for a year while deciding that THEY MUST HAVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT THE COST!!!

Not being able to keep players like Ware and Murray and not being able to sign a player like Norman because of money puts a premium on the Cowboys having a great draft. They're not able to help themselves much in free agency due to cap space so it comes down to the draft.

Dallas could have kept Ware and Murray just like they can sign Norman if they want. There has been a false belief for many years that the only way to stay competitive is to sign all the FA's you can afford on a yearly basis. How many of you guys know that when Pittsburgh won their first SB, there was only ONE guy on that team that was not drafted by them? Had there been a salary cap then it would not have mattered to them. That is the mentality this team needs to move forward with. Draft good, develop your own players, and never get held hostage for $$ by people like Norman. We've been there and done that and it didn't work.....

So?

It was put forward that we were paying Carr 14M.

We are not in fact paying Carr 14M.
Come on man. Okay, we are paying Carr 69th/70th of $14M.

That's as stupid as saying $6.99 isn't $7 because of 1 cent when nobody gives a damn about 1 cent.

I'm not saying go out and sign a bunch of high priced free agents most teams get screwed with high priced free agents but if you want to be a good team you need to keep your best players. We allowed Ware and Murray to walk in free agency the past 2 seasons and that's part of why the Cowboys are sitting at 4-12. Their biggest need is an edge rusher and they need a great back to pair with their OL. The two players need they had.

Oh please the Cowboys sold the most tickets in the NFL last year, they ,made the most money yet lets not spend on the best CB in football. As long as people pay for a crummy product they aren't going to change.

If we are paying Carr $13.8M like bkight13 said, then yes we are paying him 69/70ths of $14M.
  1. $14,000,000 - $13,800,000 = $200,000
  2. $14,000,000 / $200,000 = 70
  3. $13,800,000 / $200,000 = 69

He's a great player but I wouldn't pay him that much either and I think our secondary is only a little less of a need than the DL.

That being said, I don't really want to see him go to the Skins. Keep him out of the division please.

I do think it's kinda funny how Stephen says this All-Pro corner is just too expensive, when Carr and Church combine for almost 14 million in salary this year. I agree with him but that's funny to me.

we are being charged 13.8m for Carr this year and that is a fact

Depends on your meaning of charged I guess.

He's making around 9 million this year, the rest of the amount is the prorations from his previous restructure. It's just an accounting method for the cap, he's not actually getting paid that much.

Brother. Brandon Carr is scheduled to make 9.1M dollars this year.

So?

We are not paying him 13.8M. People really need to understand the difference between salary cap charge and someone's salary. We are being charged a higher cap number now than his average annual salary because we were charged less in the past. This is smart management as in the past the cap was smaller.

The physical money doesn't matter, only the cap charge for the player. Jerry can afford a lot more than the salary cap to pay players. Hell, he makes over $80M/year in sponsorship from the Stadium alone! (That's more than $20M more per year than any other team in the NFL)
