Just wanted to post this for all the fans pulling their hair out over Dallas' lack of FA moves.

"We were never going to be big players in free agency this year," Stephen Jones said. "We played there last year, and we felt like we did some good things, and we've got to see what the end results are. A big focus for us is on this draft. We need to draft well."

Easy to say.... When you start free agency 20 million in the hole. Sounds like spin to me.

I dont really see where this holds a ton of merit to be honest. Of course they weren't going to be big players because they couldn't be big players. It didn't matter if they wanted to or not. Without working out new deals for Romo and Spencer they were simply never going to have the room to be players.

So him acting like Dallas has chosen to sit this out and not be players is quite frankly a slap in the face to anyone with a functional brain.

i think it's more they knew they would'nt have the room so they planned for it. you have to think they knew they would tag spencer so i don't think anyone really expected a big play in free agency. if if they extended romo and spencer tomorrow i would'nt expect much in free agency. they are looking down the road and thats a huge part of managing the cap. it's not just about this year

Yhea, S Jones basically said they will look at a vet Safety to add to the mix, and there are blurbs out there saying the Cowboys have been talking to Slauson. And maybe they look at L Robinson at around the minimum, if his concussion issues check out.

But these aren't big time signings that many may have expected.

But if we do add a vet Safety and 1 OL, even as role/depth players, it does help open up the Draft and not reach, imo.

I don't see it as spin. If Dallas really wanted to be players in FA, it would have been in a rush to cut the costs of Spencer and Romo. There clearly has been no urgency shown there.

Yea let's keep bringing back the same players and expecting a different result. if free-agency is so bad. how come great teams like Seattle and Denver are using it? this team is a mess right now. and no spin by JJ or his son will change that.

I disagree. There are ways to make room, including actually working on long-term deals with Spencer and Romo. Dallas has shown no urgency to do that because it had no plans to be big players in free agency.

So far, the Cowboys have only done what's necessary to get under the cap, to get Spencer franchised, etc.

I don't think anyone is saying that FA is bad, including Jones.

But he's trying to imply that they weren't going to be big spenders as if they had some big choice in the matter.

They didn't.

They no doubt knew they'd franchise Spencer and they knew because of that and Romo that they wouldn't have the money to do anything. So to come out and say it in the way he did, acting as if they've made this big grand choice to sit out of this, instead of being part in it, is misleading and bull.

You're sitting out Jones because you have no choice.

I do think these are the type of moves they will make if the price is right. And I think they will wait until the price is right.

The key really is the Draft next month. We HAVE to get at least 4 guys who can contribute by start of the season. And 2-3 of those guys may need to be starters.

That's really a lot of pressure on the scouts, etc. I'm sure they know a lot of jobs at VR are potentially riding on this draft.

The bottom line still is this. they are bring back all most the same team that they had last year. and one draft will not change that. you can not keep bringing back all the core players who have won nothing(and miss the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years) and expect a different result. that's my point.

Can't be. He said himself that we could gin up more cap space then we could spend if we wanted to.

The Cowboys have some good practice squad players that might not be so bad.

Who needs to spend money on old players?

It's a process.

i truthfully believe stephen when he speaks. He doesn't seem to be totally blowing smoke like jerry. I'm happy we sat back and didn't do much. Free agent crop wasn't that great this offseason. Now this upcoming draft is huge.

Right. They didn't plan to be active because they couldn't be. They wasted their resources last offseason failing to upgrade our trenches whatsoever.

Don't they have to accomplish at least one of those things before the draft to free up cap space to sign our draft picks?

They could use Doug Free savings for that also.
