Stephen Jones says pass rush remains Cowboys’ top need going into draft

The Dallas Cowboys face an interesting decision later this month with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft.

They could go several ways with that pick, although pass rush remains a pressing need for a team that compiled just 31 sacks a season ago. In 2014, they had only 28.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones acknowledged improving the pass rush is once again high on the list.

“At the end of the day, our defensive front is still a position that we keep our eye on in terms of always trying to get better there,” Jones said during a radio interview on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday.

“Ultimately we want to find a dominant type of pass rusher. Obviously that’s easier said than done.”

Ohio State’s Joey Bosa is regarded as the top pass rush prospect in this draft class followed by Oregon’s DeForest Buckner...

Couple of high picks, numerous free agents, and a ton of money on a reclamation project later........Dallas - shockingly - finds itself in the exact same position it was in 2 years ago.

Maybe it isn't the DL that needs addressed first and foremost........

Stephen is just vocalizing about what everyone and their granny knows to be true.

Our pass rush does need help more desperately than anything else on this team.

But just because you want the next JJ Watt doesn't mean he's in this draft.

Each draft uniquely offers what it offers. You get the best it has to offer, regardless of position.

Absolutely.
I've been saying that about QBs too. The team's unique evaluation has to match the pick. If it does, great. If not, don't panic and overdraft.

I do agree it's the greatest need though.
probably worth pointing out, however, that D-Law had 7 sacks in the last 8 games...so he at least is coming along.

At this point, based on what's going on, the Cowboys wouldn't be over drafting Goff or Wentz at 4.

You got it....

How many years are these guys going to be chasing a pass rush.
It's going to start to be at the expense of other positions long term. There is only so much salary cap, and draft picks to go around to all 22 positions.

We may be sacrificing a franchise QB, franchise RB, cornerstone DB in this draft this year because of the never ending pursuit of the pass rush.

As long as they evaluate them as players that are normally worth the 4th overall pick to Dallas specifically, yes.

i agree maybe it isn't dl that needs to be addressed first and foremost. and I sure don't think drafting another corner in the first round is the answer.

Could be wrong, but he might be suggesting it's a coach/gm problem.

Yeah, that's what he's getting at. I meant that our DL situation's not really what it was two years ago at all. The young players we've added with high picks can all play. What we lack is that game changing rush end like Ware, but then those don't exactly grow on trees.

We've come a long way on the DL in three years. It was a big expensive rebuilding project.

I'm also starting to wonder how important is a great pass rushing DE when most of the teams we play get the ball out in 1.5 seconds. We really need corners that can jam recievers and play through pick plays.

We could have Demarcus Ware, Harvey Martin and Too Tall Jones all in their prime, but if the QB gets the ball out quick it really doesn't matter.

Yep. You need 11 on defense. Teams just take what's open, and they take it fast.

Just an observation, I think that QBs who get the ball out in 1.5 seconds are hard to find. At least QBs who are accurate and not just dumping off the ball for 2 or 3 yard gains. If you have one of those guys, they usually beat you. It's why really good QBs are so important. The modern NFL counts on the fact that you will not be able to sustain that over the course of a game and what you end up with is an Offense that can't sustain drives and/or kicks a lot of FGs as opposed to scoring TDs.

Defensively, this is why it's so important to have 11 guys on the field who can tackle and that is an area where the Cowboys, IMO, have suffered. We haven't fielded a team who can tackle well for awhile now, IMO. It' such an overlooked part of the game. Used to be that everybody could do it. Now, it's kinda just accepted that guys are not going to do it. I don't get that.

I am answering for ME...not him with my reply.

Two years ago they were looking for a pass rusher and spent picks in the second to move up to get D.Law.
Last year they took a chance on a player with known college drug issues and a player that failed a drug test at the combine and drafted him in R.Gregory.
Last year we also took a chance on a troubled player who had spent time away from football due to legal issues and NFL suspension and it did not quite pay off for us.

This year...in S.Jone's own words... “Ultimately we want to find a dominant type of pass rusher. Obviously that’s easier said than done.”

Maybe this year we try and get another good 3 tech to help, maybe we draft another DE...whatever the case, it is no question we still need help getting to the QB on defense.

New CBA didn't help that with limit practices.
