Stephen Jones worries about older Cowboys fans deciding, “We’re done”

The Cowboys last won a Super Bowl in January 1996. This year is the 20th anniversary of the event. Which means that anyone born after Dallas beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX can’t relate to the Cowboys as NFL champions.

Via Jon Machete of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones recently was asked at a press conference whether he’s worried about the fact that a generation of kidsdon’t know the Cowboys as a championship team.

“Of course,” Jones said. “I mean, I’m worried every day that we don’t get a championship. You worry about that all the time. That’s why we’re very aggressive in trying to get there. It’s just not acceptable in our minds that we haven’t been able to win a championship in so long. I do worry about that. I worry about that all the time.”

Jones isn’t worried only about the kids.

“I worry about that with older fans, that they finally say, ‘We’re done,'” Jones said. “That’s why we try to do everything we can to show respect to our fans, to do things that I think are good things that our fans think are good things for our team. But at the end of the day, as I said, it’s all about the game and it’s all about winning a championship, and we got to get that done.”

I'm too old to switch teams lol. I'm a die hard Cowboys fan win or lose, just how it is Does not mean I don't want a championship as much or more than any other fan but I have never based being a fan of any team based on winning. I have always figured a true fan will be there hell or high water

I'm the same way. I have a friend who has 5 different teams he likes. Basically whatever team is good at the time. He's so annoying

If it was really about respect for fans (and players) and appreciation of the franchise's history, there would have been a 50th Anniversary Team announced, and introduced on the field at halftime of a game. Fans could have voted on this team, as was the case in 1984 for the 25th anniversary.

There was a 50th anniversary logo, and a ton of merchandise sold with that logo. But no fan vote, and no team.

The younger fans are the ones that switch. They are more invested in the players than the teams.. For instance Lebron.what ever team he plays for is their favorite team.

I think this is pretty true. Old head fans may complain more, but few are ready to jump ship. Too much emotional capital invested already.

Shame on any fan, especially an older fan who considers it. You older guys at least saw championships. Beating Detroit two years ago is my best victory and I'd never be done

Kids today follow players, not teams, as it's been stated.

It's understandable. They come from broken homes in a broken society that celebrates individualism and showmanship, makes excuses for bad behavior, and forces them to be self-reliant because they don't have family "teams" to count on.

Or maybe it's just Madden.

It's about the $$$. If you're irrelevant long enough, the 'shareholder' fans will lose interest and the team and ownership will in turn, lose that money.

I'll always be a fan, but I'm not paying for a bad product.

If the head coach doesn't right the ship, fans will quickly begin to grow restless, and the Joneses will have to make a difficult decision. Risk losing a good portion of the fanbase dollars, or give up on their hoped-for, long-term head coach.

Right Stephen, if that was the case then JG would have been gone. He's right though...old fans such as myself don't care half as much because we know they outcome.

I've learned over the past 20 years to keep my expectations low. Any success we have is a pleasant surprise to me. I love my team but don't expect them to win a championship any time soon. If they do I'll be happy, but I won't be emotionally invested anymore.

The herd could use some thinning anyway. Always happy to see the wagoners head for greener pastures.

The problem with that is after the herd is thinned out and all that's left is us diehards, the only way it stays that way is if the team continues to fall short. As soon as the wins start stacking up, the "wagoners" will be back and we'll back were we are right now with the fanbase. I honestly prefer the fanbase the way it is. You diehards know who you are so just keep being the faith.
