Keep in mind.....as of March, his current contract expires. How can he "hold out" with a contract?

He’s under the tag but not under contract.

He can negotiate with other teams beginning March 11th and can also negotiate a long term contract with the Cowboys, which Stephen indicated today seems unlikely.

The deadline to negotiate a long term deal is July 15th. After that he plays on the one year deal unless he refuses to sign, which is when a “hold out” begins.

If he doesn’t sign by week ten he loses a year of eligibility and is unpaid for missed games

A player who hasn’t signed the tender is not required to attend OTAs (mid-May) or required minicamps (mid-June). If they don’t report to actual training camp (late July), they can be fined.

People call that “holding out”, but that’s not the actual case. He’s just choosing not to attend.

There's a reason Stephen said, "We can't take a chance on losing him." I know NO team will consider offering Pickens a deal that requires giving up two 1st round picks. In other words, his current market value is likely close to the tag range $28-32M but as stated, run back another All-Pro year with no behavior issues and write your own ticket 2027. Either way, this is a win-win for George, coz his only leverage is to sit out the entire year.

It instantly becomes a win-lose situation (not in his favor) if he is injured or he has a down year. Say, after having to play with Joe Milton under center for half a season or more.

Good question. It would suck if the Cowboys lose Pickens. No draft picked WR this year has the potential Pickens has already proven. The offense would be seriously affected if we lose Pickens. I'm pretty sure Schotty, Dak, CeeDee and the rest of the team agree with that.

Yeah without Pickens they just double cover Lamb, and your passing game is a much less lethal unit. The running game will be less effective without the 2 number one receivers on the field together as well. Dallas will be running against 7 and 8 man fronts, with the reduced threat through the air.

I believe the player is fired up. He's getting paid by hook or crook, by some team. The tag only serves as a placeholder and protects the team and the player. Smart move.
