Slaton's ultimate goal is the NFL. What team he plays for doesn't really matter, he says. "My favorite team has been the Cowboys since I was little. But I wouldn't mind playing for anybody. I definitely want to play two more years at West Virginia."

Slaton grew up in Levittown near Philadelphia but always cheered for the Dallas Cowboys because his favorite player was Emmitt Smith. If he follows in Smith's fancy footsteps, he could end up as a Dancing with the Stars champ, not to mention the NFL's leading rusher.

"That's a little far down the road," Slaton says, laughing. "We'll see."

Smith made the cover of Sports Illustrated 11 times, eight solo, according to a searchable database at SI.com. Slaton made a regional cover last August along with White and fellow running back Owen Schmitt.

"That was a big deal," Slaton says. "Sports Illustrated has been around a long time, and since I was a little kid I saw a lot of different people on the cover."

If Slaton follows his game plan — win every game, play flawlessly and perhaps collect the Heisman along the way — he could be a cover boy again.

"Anything is possible," Slaton says. "If we play the way we can, a bunch of guys could get on the cover."

Steve Slaton is nice backup plan, I won't be mad at all if he's in a Cowboys uniform, provided Julius Jones doesn't prove anything in 2007...

I dont know how old this article is, but if it is anytime recently then according to slaton himself he will NOT be in the 08 draft as he CLEARLY mentioned he wants to play 2 more years at WVU. Meaning he wont be available as our primary or backup option in next years draft.....nor will he be available for any other team for that matter.

yeah, a lot of guys say that. If you look above, he mentions it there. everyone says that until $$$$$. If he has a great season, as a running back, it would be too big a risk to go back. Kudos to him if he has a Heisman worthy season and decides to go back.

He could stay his full time at WVU.

I really think Slaton and White are great friends that want to stay as long as they can.

They both seem to really be good guys.

However the lure of the NFL may be to powerful before it is all said and done.

Everyone says that until they are actually eligible and the $ signs appear. Rarely does a player say, "If I have a great year, I'm bolting to the NFL." It's a distraction to the team, and puts unneeded pressure on themself.

I think 90% of people will agree, but there is a very good chance he won't be available.

How do you figure? I think there is a real decent chance McFAdden will be there next year.

Remember Dallas has 2 first round picks and could easily strike a deal to acquire McFadden IF he's truly worth it...:wink2:

cause McFadden will probably be the #1 prospect (not pick, just prospect, kinda like Calvin Johnson), and who really knows how bad cleveland will be? Assuming they aren't worse, has Oakland passed them? How bout Detroit? Both may be in the market for McFadden, so it's really too early to say there's a good shot he'll be there.

Well, it's no secret that I like Slaton. Maybe even better then McFadden for our offense. I just think the guy is going to translate well into the NFL. He's a little bit lite but I really like the guy.
