Strong side DE Dilemma

Ive been saying it all along, there is nobody in this draft that would provide the cowboys with a passrush better than what they would get from Anthony Spencer. I see people talking about all these tweeners are answers for Dallas. When people bring up that they dont fit as SDE they say move Mincey over to SDE and have that rusher go to the weakside. The problem is they already have Lawrence who will barely be in his 2nd yr. So i dont see how this improves the passrush. Makes zero sense to me, because people are complaining about there not being a passrush and their solution is suggesting to just move Mincey to the strong side, and add a tweener like a Orchard or Harold, who would sit behind Lawrence.

Personally i think this needs to handled in Free Agency. Stephen Jones has come out and said Dallas would look for Value rather than splash, but i dont think you can do that at DE and get production. I like Spencer but he's old, and i cant see Dallas giving him more then another yr, so they give him a yr and next yr are in the same posistion. So IMO you have to make that splash at DE and go to the draft not having to reach for a DE. Because this is a very weak draft at 4-3 DEs.

So IMO there are 3 guys at SDE for this team that would make an impact IMO. Greg Hardy, Pernell McPhee and Jabaal Sheard.

Greg Hardy, probably provides the best passrush and makes the DL a strength just by stepping on the field. BUT there is the off the field and looming suspension. People are saying the charges were dropped so he shouldnt be suspended. But the NFL doesnt care, they do their own investigations. Hardy met with league officials Wed,and what was said was to remain private. Now knowing the NFL wants the photos of the victim that were taken by police is going to be big. Having them photos that werent shown to the public can give the league enough evidence to suspend. If these photos show the victim beat up then you can bet he will be suspended. Just because Hardy gave the woman so hush money doesnt mean the NFL will not suspend him. They spend alot of money trying to show they are going to go hard on any domestic violence cases. So i dont think Dallas would touch him unless he was not given any kind of suspension. I just dont see the league not getting some kind of suspension from him. I just think the league is going to try and make an example out of someone. Think thats Hardy.

Pernell McPhee, is a big strong man who can play on the edge and can kick inside if you need him too. McPhee played OLB, DE, and DT for the Ravens this past yr. Has gotten sacks at all 3 spots. But 4 of his 7.5 sacks came as a DE. He holds his ground and plays the run very good, can run down the ball in pursuit. The thing that i like most about him is he has been taught for the past 4 yrs how to rush the passer by probably the best in the NFL in the Ravens coaches.

Jabaal Sheard, He played De his first 2 yrs in the NFL but was forced to play OLB. Which basically was a misuse of his skills because he;s not very good in space as a OLB. He;s a passrusher but Pettine system used him more in drop backs to cover RBs coming out of the backfield. Then got stuck behind better OLBs. A move back to DE could be a better fit for him as he can rush the edge and would only command a salary in the 4-5mil range a yr.

I think with Hardy's situation the easy call for me is McPhee. Big and strong, plays the run contains the edge and rushes the passer from the edge and the interior.

Pernell McPhee 5 yrs 42mil 15mil SB 18mil Guaranteed.
8.4mil per yr avg

Not interested in giving big-time money to a part-time player.

If we're choosing a consolation prize for failing to get the best, give me Sheard.

I commend you for at least considering some other candidates besides the "Troubled" Hardy
who lives in the Commish's doghouse. We'll probably get someone like we did last year but,
I don't think you will see that person until at least the 2nd week of FA. Just like Stephen said.

Agreed. Hardy can be had at a discount, and rehabilitated with the 'Boys HR dept. But if things come out to poison that guy, Sheard would be the man.

Just bc a guy doesn't start doesn't mean he doesn't help. We use a rotation...adding a guy that bring X amount of sacks...let's just say 5...even if he isn't a starter, definitely improves the pass rush

Lawrence should be much improved going into his 2nd year. Don't base it on last year as a whole. He was playing better toward the end in his limited time playing.
I think in the OTA's, mini camp, they will work on which side he best fits, depending on FA's / draft picks signed.
I am not concerned with that. Just get a player that works best. Mincey started getting sacks later on also. They now know more what the have in both of them. And can find a player that compliments them well. Someone will emerge this year.

I like reading about options and can't wait to see who we get. Somehow there is a Mincey type gem out there we are overlooking but the scouts have dialed one in, you watch. Everybody is gonna say Who?

anybody who thinks Hardy is going to sign for cheap is delusional. He will be in JAX, TB, or Cincy

Maybe, but not as delusional as giving big money to a part-timer.

I'd pay a proven starter in Hardy $12 million a year before I would give $8.5 to a non-starter.

You get what you pay for here.

I agree. Fans wanting a player does not mean he will come cheap, there are 31 other teams and some just as much in need of a pass rusher. If his off the field issues are that grave that no one else would want him then why in the hell would Dallas want him? I would hope any contract offer Dallas makes to him will come with some clauses in the contract to protect the Cowboys

Well he didnt start because who was ahead of him? This guy named Terrell Suggs. Ever heard of him?

Jabaal Sheard would be the best bet, imho, to give Dallas the best value for an affordable cost. Cleveland had him miscast as an OLB in the 3-4 where he's like a fish out of water. Put him at DE with the Cowboys and he'll blossom. He'd more than likely come at a very affordable cost and finally be in his element as a 4-3 DE..

Yes, I am pulling for him to step up too.

Guy was gonna have a monster yr his SR yr but that reach for that Mannion sack and Mannions size and his momentum taking him the opposite direction was too much for his pectoral. Broaddus and Mickey talked about him and Lee always together working out, and Garnder body has changed. In pictures of him on his twitter and stuff he looks a little more lean and bigger around the shoulders. Think he's gonna have another gear this yr.
