Isn't it basically this:

5 yard cushions or more at all times
Never turn around for the ball
Never get an interception
Get burnt repeatedly
Repeat

Sturm, you're the hardest working guy in the business.

Great article.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is how some coverage are more vulnerable to getting gashed by the run or by running QBs. For example, I like 2-man for coverage but it's probably the worst for run defense or for containing a running QB.

In order to run the Seattle Cover 3 or the traditional Tampa 2-- you need a playmaker at S. Tampa had John Lynch, Seattle has Earl Thomas. We have had nothing back there since Woody retired and Roy W got exposed.

However-- Byron Jones has a higher ceiling (athletically speaking) than either Lynch or Thomas. He needs to take some steps forward in terms of his football IQ and he definitely needs to make more big plays-- but if he does, I think our secondary can actually be decent for a change.

Somethiing Seattle also has is height. The zones that Cover 3 gives you has weaknesses behind that first line of LBers and the roving Safety (Chancellor). A QB who can touch the pass behind that zone is usually going to be fine - but they put plenty of height which makes it a llitte tougher. Add in the range of a free safety (Thomas) to close lightning fast, and their man-zone combo concept the corner backs (Sherman) run, you have a neat little system. And this doesn't even start talking about the weird gap concepts the fronts run (e.g. - you can't call Seattle a one or two-gap defense because they legit do both....on the same play).
