Shazier has a heck of a hard time getting off blocks... and honestly he overruns or otherwise misses a ton of tackles. I would've been annoyed if he was the pick when Martin was on the board.

Also, I can't buy this story that we were on the phone with his agent and PIT caught wind. What would be our motivation to make that call before we were on the clock? Just not sure it makes any sense.

bingo...watch his TAPE guys...he gets mauled by bigger olinemen in the Big Ten. How will he do in the NFL? Dick LeBeau is great and their scheme is solid, but he needs to bulk UP in a hurry

Disagree about the lack of need. We had zero depth along the OL before this pick and looking into 2015, we needed another OL. Free will be gone next year. This pick allows one of our starters from last year to become depth. In 2015, we move Martin to tackle and find another guard via the draft or FA.

I felt with the loss of Ware and Hatcher and the signing of Melton RDE was our greatest need. I'm not sure if Crawford or Mincey are quick twitch edge rushers.

I'd imagine we were also looking at options for trading down if we were going to take Shazier, and were gauging whether or not it was safe to do so. It might just have been that PIT also was trying to get to Shazier's agent for the same reason, and when he was engaged, they decided to pull the trigger since they needed help at LB and he was their guy.

I like both Shazier and Martin ok, and would have been alright with either, given how the board had played out. A trade back would have been better, but if it wasn't there, then it wasn't there.

WIth such a deep draft, teams aren't interested in dealing middle round picks to get QBs. That kind of surprises me, but it should make the top of the second round interesting when the next two or three QBs go quickly.

Agree that DE is a need, but no value was there. Maybe we find that value today.

Crawford was actually very disruptive towards the end of the year before last which was what started the "Crawford bandwagon". If he returns to form, I am very hopeful.

I really like Crawford. His rookie year every time he was in there I watched him to see how well he did. Almost every play he was either in on the tackle or at least disrupting the play.

This really sounds little league. How could they botch that? I read the other day we lost out to Max Unger because Jerry told Holmgren we were interested in him. I'm starting to think when I read some pre-draft inside information about who the Cowboys want it isn't a smokescreen, it's probably true.

I agree. I don't think we did a very good job disguising our interests. I think teams knew exactly what we were looking at and they drafted accordingly. Minnesota took Barr at 9, St. Louis took Donald at 13, and Pittsburgh took Shazier at 15. Was it really a surprise who we were looking at? There were a bunch of articles written about our interest in Barr and Donald. We only brought in a few 1st-round offensive players for work outs. And we showed interest in Shazier. And, a few days before the draft, we made it known that there were 4 guys we were looking at in the draft -- 3 defensive and 1 offensive. Was it really a surprise? I don't think so. I'm just surprised Miami was stupid enough to not trade up and take Zack Martin.

been widely reported our wish list in order was:
barr
donald
shazier

i am scared to death of shazier. scared to death of super freak athlete LBs and coming out of OSU doesn't help his cause with me.
i prefer martin to shazier but if we didnt get the top two i wanted a trade down.

order seems to have included martin as 4th.
in this case i think Pitt did us a favor.
