My last year of high school they started a program where students were loaned Mac Laptops to do their school work on. I loved using that laptop. I think the Mac OS is a lot better to use than Windows. One day I hope to get a Mac.

Laptops in the classroom have become a big deal on certain college campuses (particularly law schools), with some professors banning them outright. They don't want their students turned into stenographers, or wasting time cruising the Net.

When the students first got the laptops that was a problem. But then the teachers began to learn to use the remote access feature that was installed on the teachers computers (Why this wasn't taught to the teachers before the start of school I still don't know). They were allowed to view what all the students were doing in one screen. And if they needed to get a student back on track they would click on that's students screen, take control, and turn off whatever that student was doing that didn't pertain to school.

Of course you wouldn't need the laptops in Math or English class so the teachers told the students to not even take them out of their cases the entire year, unless otherwise instructed.

In Henrico county in Va all middle school students and up have laptops. It cost the parent 50 a year (insurance) but it's very usefull, students have to type all reports. only problem we had was hooking the mac up to the printers at home...

Just a side note: I never noticed till we moved to Ga but the schools in Henrico did NOT teach cursive (sp) handwriting. I'm not sure if it was cause the laptops they use in middleschool or not...

That works in high school...and corporate training classrooms.

In college, we use our own laptops. And that's what bbgun was referring to.

I know for a fact all I did while in college was surf the web. Traditional instructor-led teaching is ridiculously boring. They've got to make it more interactive for the students where they're actually using their computers for classwork.

School loaned laptops, that brings back memories. A couple of years ago I bought an ibook off of ebay and had a terrible time get it sent to me. After going back and forth with the seller and getting all kinds of stories it finally arrived after a little over a month.

Everything was fine until out of the blue about 6 months later I got a call from a CA police detective inquiring about my ibook. She told me there had been a series of thefts of school laptops out there where the school would let the students use a computer and then they'd turn it in at the end of the year. Apparently a couple of students were stealing laptops from other students and then selling them on ebay. They were also listing and selling the same computers multiple times and never shipping it.

She initially asked for the serial number and if there was a tag identifying it as the property of the particular school, which there wasn't. She then said I needed to send it to back to the police dept so they could give it back to the school. I asked about getting my money back since they caught the thief and she said I'd have to take that up later. She gave me her name and number and said she'd get back to me and that was over 3 years ago I've never heard back from her.

Needless to say, I haven't bought anything over $50 from ebay since, but I do love the Macs.

Well most teachers use powerpoints to teach these days, so having a laptop in class makes it easy to download them to your own personal laptop.

I am going to be building a new computer sometime this summer, I keep trying to convince myself to get a mac and forget building one though.

I would really like to have a mac in the house. Little pricey though.

I bought a Macbook in October and LOVE it. It is so fast and QUIET. We have a PC in the computer room and it is constantly making noise and is soooo slow. I keep getting this Operation Error now that I have downloaded IE 7 since the annoying download now kept popping up. I finally caved after a year and wish I hadn't. Nothing is wrong with the application error it just doesn't think the computer is connected and just hitting back or refesh gets me to what I need to look at. Annoying - yes, but a lot of Windows stuff is annoying. Haven't had one problem with a Mac and I was anti-Apple for many years. Doubt I will buy anything else when it comes to future computers.

macmall.com has some good discounts...you can also say you go to a college in your state to get a discount as they dont ask for any proof.

I dual boot all 3 (Windows XP, Mac OS X, Linux).

I don't boot to the Mac OS X (haven't in 4 months). I guess I could try to find a reason to use Mac OS X for stuff, but that'd be wasting my time having to reboot so often (I don't like VM software). The only reason I got it was for one app to capture an HD stream from a firewire cable. Other than that, I find it more annoying than Windows.
