Here's an interesting hypothetical regarding T.O. and the Cowboys' Ring Of Honor...
Obviously, T.O. has had a magnificent career and should be a lock for the Hall of Fame... maybe not first ballot, but he will likely get in eventually. Despite the "controversy", the voters can't keep the guy out forever. He's just been too good.
Despite his HOF credentials, however, he will likely never be a part of any teams' Ring Of Honor (or whatever the 49ers and Eagles call their similar rings). He bounced around too much and caused too much trouble (some real, some media created) at his previous stops. No way would the 49ers give him that kind of love, and his chances in Philadelphia are about as good as mine.
So here's the hypothetical...
Say T.O. plays an additional 2-3 seasons in Dallas AFTER 2007, due to an extension via Jerry. That would give him 4-5 years as a Dallas Cowboy.
Say he continues his stellar play, putting up Pro Bowl caliber numbers each year, and giving us a dynamic weapon that helps us win a Super Bowl during his time here.
Say he really has "turned over a new leaf." His buddy-buddy relationship with Romo is no fluke. He stays away from the controversy, and continues being the model citizen he's been since the end of the 2006 season. The younger guys continue to look up to him as a role model, and his hard work and dedication rubs off on guys like Crayton, Hurd, and Stanback, each of whom elevates their games and gives a lot of credit to T.O. for their ascension.
If all of these conditions were actually met in the next 2-3 years...
Do you think Jerry would eventually induct T.O. into the team's Ring Of Honor?
And would YOU, the fan, be okay with it if he was inducted?
Personally, I could see it happening. And if the above conditions were met, I'd be totally fine with it.
I doubt Jerry gives a crap what T.O. did to "ruin" two of the Cowboys' biggest rivals, before he came into town. Nor does Jerry care much about the media backlash. He's used to it.
But the fans' opinions will matter to Jerry, for obvious PR/monetary reasons.
