T.O. and the Ring Of Honor...

Here's an interesting hypothetical regarding T.O. and the Cowboys' Ring Of Honor...

Obviously, T.O. has had a magnificent career and should be a lock for the Hall of Fame... maybe not first ballot, but he will likely get in eventually. Despite the "controversy", the voters can't keep the guy out forever. He's just been too good.

Despite his HOF credentials, however, he will likely never be a part of any teams' Ring Of Honor (or whatever the 49ers and Eagles call their similar rings). He bounced around too much and caused too much trouble (some real, some media created) at his previous stops. No way would the 49ers give him that kind of love, and his chances in Philadelphia are about as good as mine.

So here's the hypothetical...

Say T.O. plays an additional 2-3 seasons in Dallas AFTER 2007, due to an extension via Jerry. That would give him 4-5 years as a Dallas Cowboy.

Say he continues his stellar play, putting up Pro Bowl caliber numbers each year, and giving us a dynamic weapon that helps us win a Super Bowl during his time here.

Say he really has "turned over a new leaf." His buddy-buddy relationship with Romo is no fluke. He stays away from the controversy, and continues being the model citizen he's been since the end of the 2006 season. The younger guys continue to look up to him as a role model, and his hard work and dedication rubs off on guys like Crayton, Hurd, and Stanback, each of whom elevates their games and gives a lot of credit to T.O. for their ascension.

If all of these conditions were actually met in the next 2-3 years...

Do you think Jerry would eventually induct T.O. into the team's Ring Of Honor?

And would YOU, the fan, be okay with it if he was inducted?

Personally, I could see it happening. And if the above conditions were met, I'd be totally fine with it.

I doubt Jerry gives a crap what T.O. did to "ruin" two of the Cowboys' biggest rivals, before he came into town. Nor does Jerry care much about the media backlash. He's used to it.

But the fans' opinions will matter to Jerry, for obvious PR/monetary reasons.

That's a good question, Nav22.

Deion Sanders was a Cowboy for 5 years. And that was enough for many to think he is Ring of Honor worthy (although others disagree).

So if including this season, Owens somehow put together 4 truly outstanding, league leading, team-oriented, model citizen, championship winning kinds of seasons .... I'd say that he has a shot.

Time is against him. He's close to 34 years old. It is tough for any player to be all-world at 37 or 38.

IMO Deion shouldn't be in the ROH either.

T.O. will have to win us a Super Bowl for me to forgive him for that show on our Star......then I will think about ring of honor

To even suggest the possibility of T.O. or Deion (or even someone like Charles Haley) being on the Ring of Honor is absurd. It's for true Cowboys, guys like Larry Allen and Darren Woodson deserve consideration. Of the new generation, Romo, Witten, Newman and Ware seem the most likely (possibly Barber as well.)

There are several Cowboys greats who should be considered for ROH before even thinking about TO for ROH.

You must be joking.

Have you ever looked at the Ring of Honor?

Have you looked at the roster of former Dallas Cowboys greats?

Take a look at the great Dallas Cowboys players who are not in the Ring of Honor, and you will have answered your own question.

Terrell Owens and Deon Sanders will never even be considered for the Ring of Honor, and it has nothing to do with how great they were as players.

Good hypothetical question. Don't remember if TO turns 34 or 35 in December and he has 1 year remaining on his contract. If he plays at the level he did in the first game for rest of this season w/o problems, Jerry will certainly bring him back for 08 season when he'll turn 35/36. After that, he would be on a year to year basis & depending on how our other WRs develop & also how much of a discount TO would give the team to stay with the Cowboys.

TO is a great player and if he's turned a new leaf and handled properly it certainly won't be his fault if we don't win a SB; he doesn't play defense. If TO hangs around long enough, I'd certainly be willing to accept him into the ROH.

Come all people, the star on the middle of our field isn't the American flag. Get over it. I would never support Deion getting into the ROH and despite his great play with us for 3 years really don't see Haley in there either. I guess I just think that if TO really changes his ways hasn't he in fact shown he's become a real Cowboy and deserving of that consideration. As for the HOF, I really do think TO will have a hard time getting in. He's riled too many sports writers in SF & Philly & getting in as a Cowboy won't make it any easier. Now if we were to win the SB for the next 3 years with great play by TO then I think most on this board, despite what they say, will happily support TO into our ROH & the HOF.

The ROH embodies so much more than stats and succes on the field. It is more about intangibles.

I would like to see Bill Bates up there someday as well as a few others. Never TO.

Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Herb Adderley played for Dallas from '70-'72. He played in Dallas' first two Super Bowls.

Is he in the Cowboys' Ring of Honor?

Hell no.

Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The same can be said for Hall of Fame receiver Lance Alworth.

Add Hall of Fame tight end (he wasn't just a head coach, young people) Mike Ditka to that same set of circumstances.

I just don't get it.

Drew Pearson doesn't get any love from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Jerry Jones and has been forgotten (or never even thought of) by the newest Dallas fans. Yet, he was one of the greatest Cowboys receivers of all-time.

OTOH, some fans can't contain their affections for Terrell Owens and wish to shower him with accolades of Dallas Cowboys adornment.

Drew Pearson isn't even in the Ring of Honor. No way in hell does T.O. go in.

Honestly, if Owens does what you say he does, and he leads us to multiple Super Bowl wins, then I do think he has a shot.

I think it needs to be more than just 1 super bowl win for us to even consider him.

Obviously, you're not factoring in the public pressure which Terrell Owens fans could place onto Jerry Jones in order to make this happen. Sadly, ex-Cowboy greats like Pearson do not have an adoring public to campaign in their favor.

Bill Bates? He was a strictly mediocre player who played with a lot of heart and worked as hard or harder than anyone else out there, but that doesn't make him RoH worthy.

I disagree that it is more intangibles than anything. Every single person up there had a HUGE effect on the Cowboys at their respective times.

However, saying all that, no hired guns in the RoH. :D
