STATELINE, Nev.—Dan Quinn's loss proved to be the local community's gain at Lake Tahoe.
The ex-NHL player's final approach shot on Sunday landed in the pond guarding the 18th hole at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, allowing Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to leapfrog him into second place worth $60,000.
But because Romo wants to maintain his amateur status, he can't accept the winnings and they will be donated to local charities.
Tournament officials say in all, area non-profits will receive a record $160,464 from this year's event.
The money is in addition to $190,000 NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has contributed the past two years to a fund for victims of a wildlife that burned more than 250 homes at Lake Tahoe in 2007.
