Tampa Bay Buccaneers new offensive coordinator Greg Olson will bring 'more dynamic routes' and increase in plays
In just one week, new offensive coordinator Greg Olson has increased the number of plays in the game-plan 'dramatically,' according to coach Raheem Morris.
OIson, who replaced fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski just 10 days before Sunday's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, has made the biggest improvement in the Bucs' passing game.
"He brings some more dynamic routes,'' Morris said. "You'll see different routes, you'll see routes down the field...You see more of the down field, double-move hitches. You'll see things of that nature. You'll see the timing game there as well. But if we're going to be a good team, we're going to have to use our play-action passing. We want to use it as a weapon. You'll get a chance to see some of that stuff from Oly (Olson).
"The number of plays increased dramatically. I didn't actually count them before I came down here, but you'll see a significant amount more than I think you have seen in the preseason.''
Despite wanting to throw the ball down the field more, Bucs' quarterbacks averaged just 5.25 yards per pass attempt.
Olson, the Bucs quarterbacks coach who was denied a chance to interview for the offensive coordinator position last spring, acknowledged that his appointment came at the wrong time. Instead of having time to install his own system, Olson has had to adapt and modify Jagodzinski's plan.
"Certainly, it's a difficult position, but I think opportunity obviously comes in many different ways,'' Olson said. "Really, there was no other answer when it was presented to me. Am I excited about the opportunity? Yes. Did it come at the wrong time? Yes.
"But you've got to put your nose to the grindstone and go to work. I mean, there is no other answer to that. Coach Jagodzinski set a foundation. We'll move forward with the foundation. Did it catch me off guard and catch some people off guard? Certainly it does when something like that happens. But there is no other decision but to just keep working.''

Bucs QB Leftwich sees new wrinkles added, not new offense under Olson
Quarterback Byron Leftwich believes new offensive coordinator Greg Olson will continue to want to push the passing game downfield. But instead of the offense undergoing a facelift, a few wrinkles may be added.
Olson, the team's quarterbacks coach, replaced fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski 10 days before the regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
"I like him a lot from the standpoint that I think he'll keep that aggressive mindset as an offense,'' Leftwich said of Olson. "He loves when you play aggressive at the quarterback position. But he also wants you to play smart. He challenges you as a quarterback, he puts you in tough situations to see how you react and what response you come up with. The thing I like about with Oly, you're always stimulated, even in practice. That tends to make Sunday when those things happen, you're prepared for anything.''
Leftwich said players were surprised by the move but he expects the transition to be fairly seamless.
"I don't want to say it will be better or worse, but we haven't changed a lot,'' Leftwich said. "We changed some things because Jaga and Oly are too different people. But at the same time, we really haven't changed a lot. It's not like we're going in with a whole new complete system. We're not trying to do that. We have a system in place, we just have a different guy calling the system. There's different ideas and different formations here and there. So there are differences but we won't be learning a brand new complete offense in a week. But there will be some new wrinkles added. And as a player in this league, you're taught to go play and that's what I'm going to do. We're professionals, man. We're able to deal with a lot more than you guys give us credit for.
"In this league, in this time frame that it happened, things always happen around the league on every team because everybody knows we're down to the last cuts. So you kind of prepare yourself for something to happen. I'll say none of us was prepared for that. But we're professionals, we'll handle it like men and we'll move on.''
