Ok... So this guy named TJack started this year in Minnesota. He was the young prospect expected to lead the Vikings for years to come. The guy started two games and stunk up the place. His rather astute head coach decided to pull him in favor of the vet backup who went on to take the reigns and lead the team down the road to success. Let's forget about Brad Johnson... I know he's a lame duck that's beyond his prime.
For the next 11 weeks Tarvaris sat on the bench and watched his backup just win baby. He got a chance to see things from a different perspective. No, he hadn't sat for years before starting like Tony. He started and then was benched due to poor play. This allowed the fire to burn inside and build. No young prospect wants to deal with competition and get beat out by a wily vet after being given the starting nod. That's embarrassing...
In week 13 the wily vet goes down due to injury and suddenly Tarvaris is thrust back into the limelight. He is suddenly relevant again. He embraces the opportunity because the fire inside him had caused him to refocus his efforts. That competition at the QB position provided just the right amount of room for him to look within and evaluate his own processed. How he prepares, the meaning of success, what it means to get yourself ready to play on the big stage... etc...
He comes in for the last four weeks and lights the team on fire. His burning desire to retain that starting spot is evident in his game play. It's infectious. Suddenly he is actually leading the team and his game play rubs off on those around him. In this last 4 week stretch since re-entering the starting lineup his TD/INT ration is 8/1. The guy is so focused that the HC's hand has been forced to basically keep the wily vet on the bench for their playoff game even though the wily vet is ready to get back in there.
Who knows what will happen when Philly plays Minnesota? Regardless, Tarvaris has repositioned himself as the leader of that team and is focused like never before. That's competition. As I have stated before, competition only makes you stronger. This is just one example. In my humbled opinion, Tony needs competition. Thanks for the ears...
