Tarvaris Jackson and Tony Romo... Can we learn something here?

Ok... So this guy named TJack started this year in Minnesota. He was the young prospect expected to lead the Vikings for years to come. The guy started two games and stunk up the place. His rather astute head coach decided to pull him in favor of the vet backup who went on to take the reigns and lead the team down the road to success. Let's forget about Brad Johnson... I know he's a lame duck that's beyond his prime.

For the next 11 weeks Tarvaris sat on the bench and watched his backup just win baby. He got a chance to see things from a different perspective. No, he hadn't sat for years before starting like Tony. He started and then was benched due to poor play. This allowed the fire to burn inside and build. No young prospect wants to deal with competition and get beat out by a wily vet after being given the starting nod. That's embarrassing...

In week 13 the wily vet goes down due to injury and suddenly Tarvaris is thrust back into the limelight. He is suddenly relevant again. He embraces the opportunity because the fire inside him had caused him to refocus his efforts. That competition at the QB position provided just the right amount of room for him to look within and evaluate his own processed. How he prepares, the meaning of success, what it means to get yourself ready to play on the big stage... etc...

He comes in for the last four weeks and lights the team on fire. His burning desire to retain that starting spot is evident in his game play. It's infectious. Suddenly he is actually leading the team and his game play rubs off on those around him. In this last 4 week stretch since re-entering the starting lineup his TD/INT ration is 8/1. The guy is so focused that the HC's hand has been forced to basically keep the wily vet on the bench for their playoff game even though the wily vet is ready to get back in there.

Who knows what will happen when Philly plays Minnesota? Regardless, Tarvaris has repositioned himself as the leader of that team and is focused like never before. That's competition. As I have stated before, competition only makes you stronger. This is just one example. In my humbled opinion, Tony needs competition. Thanks for the ears...

Why don't we start with some competent offensive line play and some smarter play calling and go from there?

I fully expect those things to work themselves out between now and TC. As a fan, I try to be positive about it. Our oline is here to stay whether we like it or not since most of them are locked up with multi year deals. Can they be coached up? Sure...

However, If we go into next year with an improvement in those other two areas and Romo's gameplay doesn't change (regarding his lack of ball protection) I would hope that we would have already brought in a wily vet by that time and would also hope our esteemed HC wouldn't be afraid to make a move if need be...

Are you really trying to say Tavaris Jackson is as good as Tony Romo or that Tony Romo is as bad as Tavaris Jackson?
:lmao2: :lmao2: :lmao2: :lmao2:

You thought the Eagles defense was rough on Romo?

Watch what they do to that kid this weekend.

Not at all beavis. What I am saying is that a starting QB should have some level of competition backing him up. It will only serve to improve his level of focus when he knows the leash is just a tad bit shorter.

Now mods don't even try to say I am doing any name calling here because he set this up himself.

No Butthead. lol.

Follow the money.

Romo could have Aikman and Staubach behind him.

He knows he's the starter and that's that because he just signed for $60 mil.

The Vikings don't have that in situation in Minny.

Besides Jackson came in because Frerotte got hurt.

I'm sure Payton Manning goes out there every play wondering if his next bad pass will be his last....

Look, Romo has proved enough in 2 1/2 years that if you give him time he can get the job done. The turnovers start when the protection breaks down.

We 'coach up' the offensive line, we get a little more conservative and run oriented in our play calling, we go more with the play action pass - all of those things will keep defensive linemen and LBers out of his face and he will be more productive.

We spent how long looking for ONE decent QB to lead this team, and now you want to make him worried about getting benched? Silly.

First we need a decent backup in order to bench Romo. Hopefully Jerry sees the need after this season.

Romo can't really be pushed. That's something you do BEFORE you hand the guy a zillion dollar contract for multiple years. Competition works because the guy on the top of the chart is scared for his job and doesnt want to be beaten. A huge contract pretty much eliminates that from the equation. Especially when you have media and celebrity pals hanging around as if to constantly say "Hey, you! You are a star!", he might not respond to well to someone challenging him on it.

At this point, we either accept the fact that Romo is what he is (choke city, careless) and go about finding someone who isn't in the meantime (devastatingly expensive) or we stick with him and pretend that he isn't and hope that he somehow changes. Even though I dislike Romo and would like to see him outta here and replaced by a clutch QB somehow, i recognize that's not really feasible and have resigned myself to option 2.

It would have been nice to have not given Romo all that guaranteed money.

I agree we should have had more competition at backup QB, but Jackson was hardly playing top teams during that time. The Giants was his toughest test in week 17.

Jackson's final four games of the season were against the #5, #19, #24 & #32 defenses. (BTW Jackson really helped to light up Detroit 20-16. LOL ) The toughest game being against the Plaxico and Jacobsless Giants.

To me our biggest game this year turned out to be the Rams loss. IMO, the defense should have been able to have picked up and carried this team past the Rams for a win. Anyways a half decent, QB instead of BJob, would have won that game thus negating the need for a win against Philly.

Just for grins as a comparison Romo's last four games were against the #1, #2, #3 & #5 defenses. Pitt, Baltimore, Philly and the Giants aren't a walk in the park. I'm also guessing Jackson was a lot fitter than Romo during that period.

Sorry about that... I shouldn't have resorted to name calling. The whole thing is very frustrating. The oline needs a shot in ther collective arms, the oline coach may be beyond his years regarding acceptance of his philosophy, the OC just isn't grasping everything, and most importantly the starting QB appears to have a lackadasical attitude toward things after getting gifted 67 mil... Happy New Year to you and yours.

because we need a good back up regardless, and some healthy competition never hurt anyone. Now it may tell you what kind of intestinal fortitude a person has....but it never hurt anyone. I agree totally with the the original poster. Tony has made a few comments that proves that he is too comfortable.

Which is still way better than Romo's putrid performance in the last month of the season, even when you figure that TJack's damage was against a bunch of "eh" teams. It's not like the Vikes offense is full of ALL STARS (minus AP) around TJack. He did what he had to do to close it out during the stretch.

Romo didn't.

"bro".

He in no way said that Jackson was better than Romo. What he said was competition has been good for Jackson (and it has) and lack there of has been bad for romo. Romo is very nonchalant with his approach, and his response to games these days.

Ok. think less Romo/Tarvaris... and more... competition at the position/no competition at the position...

Knowing you though, you still don't see anything. I'm not surprised.
