TE based on preseason

Who would you all say are the best TEs in the NFL

Ill take a stab:

  1. Gronk
  2. Kelce
  3. Ertz
I also like Engram, Walker, Rudolph, Graham and Doyle

But its not like there are a ton of them

The Cowboys had one of the best TEs in the history of the league for 15 years, and got all of two wildcard round playoff wins with him. TE isn’t an impactful position. If you have to be talent deficient somewhere, there are worse places.

Many are seeing disaster, saying things like the team doesn't have a TE who can catch passes, the team doesn't know how to use and TEs, and the team won't use this group of TEs, but is that really what we've seen this preseason?

To begin with, the team has played without its elite RB and most of the time without its starting QB and elite O-Line. And they have played without game planning.

Yet the TEs have caught 23 passes for 176 yards in 3 games. Not a particularly exciting ypc average, but significant yardage, and a sizable part of the offense. Overall, I would say it's a nice sign for a unit with all the things going against it mentioned in the paragraph above.

Regular season will include the starting QB, the elite RB, the elite O-Line (minus one), game plans, and no need to play everyone just for the sake of getting a look at them. With those benefits it's not at all unreasonable that the TEs could get a similar number of catches, and increase the ypc number 2-3 yards per catch. That would be a significant and sizeable contribution to the offense.
this group is far from elite....but I think they are one of those units that teams cant ignore, but won't game plan defensively like a gronk, witten in his prime, etc. keep in mind that witten was in decline over the past 3 years and painfully obvious the last two years, so its not like we had any real TE...no offense to Witten. he is going to be a first ballot HOF, regardless of the last two years...

I think the WR group will surprise a few this season..... and I expect to see a lot of 3 and 4 WR sets...no TE.....

Not sure why people are worried about the TEs. The biggest question for them is whether or not they can block in the two TE sets. They aren't going to be big contributors in the passing game, but we're not going to need or expect them to be, either.
That's why I think they should be used less on passing downs.

Problem is This coaching staff seems to think a te needs to be out there on every snap If you don't have any talent as a receiver then why not use more players in formations that does. Why are we checking down to a te. Thats the lowest percentage play in the book. Especially with this group.

I don't see the scheme changing much w this coaching staff. We've never won beans over utilizing a te. Not for blocking or passing. It's time to run with a more capable group because the only thing we have at Te is a good red zone threat who can break a tackle on occasion in Rico.

These tes are no better than James Hanna. And he was just a practice squad level player who we started for several years. I see a bunch of turnovers waiting to happen

I thought we'd be ok...but Im surprised at how much they've struggled blocking.
pass-receiving is fine.
By season's end,I think Schultz will have improved...Jarwin might be our starter by then.
We'll see....lotta football to be played.

Let's be honest. The only reason you'd say Rico is no good is because of what we heard about him not making the correct blocks and stuff like that. I haven't heard any thing lately about him running bad routes. If you were looking at the game and never heard that you'd be saying he is the best on the team no doubt. When he is out there is makes himself a viable target for the QB

If it were me it'd be Rico and Swaim.

Jarwin and Shultz would be cut and I'd be trading for the best TE I could find.

Nothing, with a capital N, should be based on preseason.

The first one... I have lost all faith in Garrett and Linehan game planning. I don't think they do, or know how to game plan for anything.

Could be. Or maybe a problem under center. Either way, we are gonna know at the end of the season.

The #1 TE seems pretty clear-cut to me. Jarwin can't block a Girl Scout, Rico doesn't know what route he's running, and Schultz looks worse than both of them.

Swaim would probably be the #3 TE on most teams, but folks, he's your 2018 starter.

I think Swaim is better than people think. I’m not saying he is Jay Novacheck but he can play a little bit.

Running bad routes or running the wrong routes?

Just 2 years ago with a healthy Tyron and Zeke not suspended the Cowboys were the 5th highest scoring team in the league.

This year they are back.....and with a greatly improved defense.

only use we have for a TE is a 5-7 yard pass, any idiot can run 5-7 yards for check down charlie to hit them.

Rico still intrigues me but I still want to keep Schultz. If they really had to keep only three then I would trade or cut Jarwin who I feel has a limited ceiling.

This is where drafting a TE in a top round would be appropriate. Martellus Bennett came 10 years too early, assuming a starting position would have improved his attitude.

By the way, five NFL teams had their top TE's total receptions at 25 or less and two of them, the Saints and Jaguars, were playoff teams.

Recall the Brice Butler story of Romo installing the game plan each week. I wonder how long that was going on.

Notice that the year Romo leaves the team, the offense sputters.

We should be putting our best players on the field, and the TEs aren't them.

I'm hoping Olawale can be the run blocker we need, and we go 3 wide with Beasley in the slot. Base offense, no TEs.

That probably puts our best 5 on the field, whether it includes Olawale or another WR. No TEs. With Hurn disappointing, Beasley may be our best WR and should be on the field.

well I believe in this case you are wrong, they game plan pretty well, get a lot of leads by halftime, their issue is they dont do well in in game adjustments to readjust once teams have either figured out how to stop them or players arent executing and we lose the lead, bad in game adjustments for sure..

See exhibit A, the Rams game, wasted a lead and lost.
