OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys tight end James Hanna will have knee surgery that puts his availability for the Sept. 11 season opener against the New York Giants in jeopardy, according to multiple sources.

Hanna was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp with a bone bruise. He has sought multiple opinions and has opted for the surgery.

Because the Cowboys put Hanna on the active/PUP list when camp began, he is eligible to be placed on the reserve/PUP list when the final cuts are made. If the Cowboys opt for that route, he would miss the first six games of the season and be able to return Oct. 30 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The article also mentions a broken foot for WR Chris Brown.

I'm expecting Hanna to stay on PUP for the first 6 weeks of the season.

The article doesn't say when the injury occurred -- does anyone know?

Thanks for the heads up. Too bad for him. Gives Swaim an opportunity though. Maybe an in for Rico, too.

Get it done.

Our schedule is soft for the first month of the season.

Funny how positions that seem to be a huge strength can be surprisingly vulnerable with an injury thrown in the mix. I know there was some good press on Escobar early on moving well, but haven't really heard anything or seen anything that indicates he is ready to go. So, it could be Witten and Swaim to start the season.

this is a problem. He is a key part of the running game. Escobar is being brought along slowly. Hopefully he is ready to go.

I wonder if they go light at tight end with only 3 to start and keep an extra running back early on, or if traylor can find his way onto the roster.

He had soreness in his knee when they gave physicals at the beginning of camp.

Thing is, he had to know he had pain before the physical...did he not inform the team before the physical? That was about three weeks ago, maybe even longer.....the surgery should have been done and he would be back on the field.

It's like players that wait two or three months after the season before going in for surgery...what's the point?

Swaim may have simply be nervous. This was his first real opportunity. He will have more, and we'll see how he deals with it. People are way too quick to toss others to the wolves.

But let's also not act like he's some rookie that we've never seen before either. He wasn't exactly dazzling last year in practice, he did play in some games and looked non-existent.

At best, he's likely a third TE in this league, which is fine, you need guys like that.
