I don't understand why people think pushing money forward into a drastically rising cap is a bad thing when the team is a few (defensive) players away from really contending.

You have an all pro qb right now. You have to go for it.
Yes, pushing money forward is not a big problem. They just need to make certain that whoever they give the money to in free agency is worth it.

If they can get the right free agents, I'm not concerned about how much is pushed forward.

biggest problem with pushing money forward is that mistakes will be made; players will get injured. That never seems to get factored in here. You need some leeway and NOT spend every cap dollar or have it tied up. Last year or two they have been carrying over a fair amount; they need to keep doing that and restructure AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.

this was true last off-season as well, the GM's tepid approach makes me think he had written this year off. maybe a whiff of success will change his approach next off-season...

You have to wonder if they would have released Ware knowing where they are right now.

Initial 2015 top 51 commitment before any moves are made: $149.830507M.

Estimated WR franchise tag based on unadjusted salary cap of $142M is $12.71M.

Dez Bryant franchise tag $12.71M.

Initial 2015 top 51: $162.030507M.

Restructure Tony Romo (create $12M) and Tyron Smith (create $8M): $142.030507M.

Henry Melton's contract voids (save $7.9895M after adding for a futures contract of $0.510K): $134.041007M.

Doug Free's contract voids (save $6.605M after adding a futures contract of $0.435K): $127.436007M.

The team might get Free to agree to a new deal before the void occurs, perhaps cutting his base salaries in half the next two years in order to remain with the franchise. ($130.041007M)

If Brandon Carr is released with the June designation, the savings (est $7.565M) will not take effect until June 2nd. If he is offered and agrees to a pay cut, the savings would be immediate ($4M?) but I don't know if that will even be offered.

The Cowboys currently have $3.510739M in cap space available for carryover, a big decline from when I checked in November ($9.7M). This likely reflects players like Orlando Scandrick and Barry Church meeting incentives in their contracts.

If the 2015 unadjusted salary cap is $142M (I believe it will be higher), Dallas' adjusted cap would currently be $145.510739M.

If Romo and Smith restructure, Melton and Free void, and Dez is franchised, we'd be looking at $18.074732M in cap space in this projection.

Avoiding using the franchise tag on Dez is ideal.

If we are going to shell out big money, I'd like it to be for a pass rusher. A guy like Justin Houston would be interesting but I doubt the Chiefs let him out of KC. He's going to get a big contract from them or get franchised.

We'll still be paying him and he'll be dust.

That's exactly right.

And to me the most important "guy" on the offense right now is the offensive line, and it's critical the key pieces of that are kept together because they're the ones that will make it easier for a youngster to come in and have a fighting chance without having to deal with a leaky offensive line.

Personally I think a great many young QB's are ruined by being put behind crappy offensive lines.

If they do, then they are inviting the same dead money problems that have plagued them the past two off seasons. If there was a contract on the team that I would leave alone, it's Tony Romo's.

IIRC, Romo is scheduled to count almost 28 million against the cap, how can they avoid restructuring him?

Assuming that the Salary Cap next year is 140 million, we would only have 1.7 million in cap space, clearly not enough to sign anyone.
/quote]

can't you carry forward any amount of cap your under in the previous year? If so, is that included in your number? If not any idea how much will carry forward and increase next years cap?

With these three we improve our secondary and our pass rush. We have been solid in stopping the run. Once we add some pass rushers it'll improve our entire defense.

Anyone have any thoughts on drafting DE Shawn Oakman?

Hughes is going to get big money.

A better value is Sheard from Cleveland.

I don't see Moore and Dunbar getting a second round tender. Good stuff.

Carr is your draft picks and play money during TC. Cutting Melton makes you whole. Restructuring the guaranteed portion of Romo and all of Smith is going to allow us to sign Bryant, McClain, and Murray.

Dez at ~$14m. Murray at ~$8m. McClain at ~$5m. It's going to take $25m AAV or more to sign these guys. Murray and McClain are likely not get very long deals. I don't see us heavily backloading guys we see as cornerstone so the space once we return them to the fold and even with a presumable Free restructure we are not going to be swimming in money.

That would be the ideal approach. The problem is the clock is ticking on Romo. You have to get aggressive.

I disagree but your post is totally understandable. I do think premium picks can be impsctful right away. We saw this in Frederick and Martin. Also, we can't be hostage to the notion of maximizing Romo's remaining 1-3 years or however long. There is a balance to being good now and doing right by the future. We do that by doing our jobs at draft time.

I agree. Can't learn to read defenses and go thru your progressions when the hounds are nipping.

I don't agree about the OL being more important. I still believe you must have a franchise QB to win big. He needs an OL to do that and the ancillaries. Unless you have a dominating defense then you must have a top tier QB to contend for it all.
