The Melton signing hasn't worked out for us? Are you serious?

The Brandon Carr signing was a mistake, because he was never a #1 CB. He was a #2 and we paid him top dollar expecting him to do something he hadn't. And then we moved to a system that doesn't play to his strengths.

Leonard Davis signing worked out EXTREMELY well. As did signing T.O. and La'Roi Glover.

Marco Rivera got hurt, which happens to players, but the club was suspect in signing him instead of the other guard from Green Bay who was younger and better who went for basically the same money.

Roy Williams was a questionable trade when we could have got Anquan Boldin for a lot less.

You're confusing correlation with causation, a common yet aggravating mistake.
-Melton isn't even starting for us! He was signed to be our cornerstone at the 3 technique & it hasn't worked out. Now if you're referring to the fact that we can cut bait with him after this year w/ no strings attached, then I agree with you that its not that bad of a signing. But the intention of that deal by the Cowboys front office was to protect themselves w/ Melton coming off of an injury, which he seems to have recovered from. If he was playing at a higher level I don't think Jerry Jones would mind at all paying him $7-9 million/ year, but unfortunately the coaching staff only sees him as a rotational player.

-We agree on B. Carr. You also proved my point w/ Marco Rivera.

-Leonard Davis only played at a high level his first year in Dallas. He was overpaid(7 year $49.6 million deal), too slow in pass protection, & overrated as a run blocker. Remember him getting benched for Montrae Holland? I know he made a few probowls, but after his 1st season in Dallas I can't see why.
Don't get me started on T.O., while he was a good player, he DESTROYED the locker room chemistry on that 2008 team which was the most disappointing season for me as a Dallas Cowboy fan. To add insult to injury Jerry Jones resigned him to a new 4 yr $34million deal before cutting him a year later; taking a $9 million cap hit.

-I'm not questioning what we gave up in the trade(the 2009 draft was terrible for a lot of teams that year), but the money we gave Roy Williams WR. Remember Roy Williams would have been a free agent in 2009 & Dallas most likely could have signed him to a similar deal without trading for him mid-way through the 2008 season. But the signing alone, 5yr $45million, was a mistake based on the player he ended up being.

-It's funny you mention La'Roi Glover because I think he was the best free agent signing this team has ever made next to signing Deion Sanders and La' Roi was one of my favorite Cowboys during his era, but those type signings are few & far between with this club.

My point is: It's all about the Benjamins & which players you allocate cap dollars to. Big money FA signings most of the time hasn't worked well for us. Resigning our homegrown players & drafting well is key.

No problem, you've staked your ground and refuse to acknowledge that the team could have tweaked some contracts and been aggresive last offseason just as you're proposing they do this offseason.

I definitely would've restructured Jason Witten this year, which the team elected not to do.

This was the last year I would've done Witten, I leave his contract alone moving forward.

Brandon Carr could've been restructured, too, but it's understandable why his deal was left alone given his play in 2013. The team knew 2014 might be Carr's final year on the roster.

Still, a restructure wouldn't have prevented releasing Carr next year with the June tag, just that the savings would have been a little less in 2015 and '16.

Yep, in fact it doesn't work out for a lot, maybe even MOST, of teams. Ask the Skins and the Pats who are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

It's not so complicated that a metaphor need be employed but it appears that any number of metaphors, pictures or diagrams would be equally unsuccessful.

You fail to realize that the Cowboys made some significant restructures last year to get under the cap...

No, that doesn't change the fact that they could have mortgaged the future caps more if they wanted.

I do remember, and I would have paid him the difference rather than sign Rivera who was a lesser player and much older.

you really do have a convenient memory. We would have had to almost double what we paid Rivera. And Rivera was only slightly less of a player

Ask Romo, Rogers, Brady, Manning which pressure they rather face. Up the middle or outside that they can just step up? QBs are usually less accurate running or rolling vs just stepping up in the pocket.

you clearly failed football 101. This has been done since the Winged T. By just about every great coach who ever was. If all you have is middle pressure it is also the easiest to counter; and your defense will look just like ours has this season. In other words to be blunt it will suck a lot of the time

You just assumed that I only want pressure up the middle and not from the outside. All I said was if I had to chose one I prefer pressure up the middle. You are over simplifying the situation. Outside pressure can also be easily countered without any push up the middle. Just ask our own QB Romo and he'll tell you which pressure bothers him the most.

Here are the numbers.

Rivera, 32, signed a five-year, $20 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $9 million. link

Wahle, who spent seven seasons in Green Bay, signed a five-year deal worth about $25 million. link

A difference of about $5M on a five year contract is only about $1M per season.

That is peanuts, not almost double.
