Preferrably a horse's hoof.

This is typical Jerry. If it were up to him, he would have postponed the nation's bicentennial celebration until 1977 if he thought it was overshadowing him winning some Little Rock Chamber of Commerce award.

You cracked me up Chief! :lmao2:

I actually find it the Jerry thing to do (whether that is synonymous w/'stupid' thats for you to decide). Jerry would rather have the spotlight to himself than share w/the 8 other AFL teams.

It could backfire on him, but you can't argue that the move is typical Jerry.

That's what I was going to say. Next year he will have the 50 years celebration to himself.

I don't like the move. I'd rather celebrate it this year.
I also agree with the post someone labled "cynical" earlier. Celebrating next year will make two years in a row to sell unique merchandise.

Seems to me like it would make perfect PR sense to celebrate and market the opening of a new stadium and a new beginning for the franchise along with celebrating 50 years of history. Its the perfect time to do both, and you really don't get another chance for another 25 years when the 75th comes around.

Boneheaded.

2010 will be the 50th season of the Vikings -- in the same year, the Cowboys will celebrate their 50th anniversary, and the Vikings will celebrate their 50th season.

How confusing will it be to fans to know that two teams, formed a year apart, will be celebrating 50-somethings in the same year?

I didn't know that. And I remain opposed to putting off the celebration until next year.

I think JJT's answer in poke's post kind of ruins my joke patch.
I have to say I find it very hard to believe that the NFL didn't let the Cowboys commemorate their 50th season this year, and Jerry gave in without a fight. Does anyone have any link to an article describing exactly what happened? Or is it all just rumor?

And there appears to be a precedent for it.

In 1969, the AFL celebrated its tenth season. It was also the 10th season for the Cowboys, but the only celebrating they did was for the NFL's 50th season, which the league celebrated in 1969.

Still, being the ultimate marketer that Jerry is, I can't believe he's passing on an opportunity to cash-in on fan desire to celebrate the team's 50th season.

Very odd . . .
I think it makes sense that he is trying to double dip. This year is all about the new stadium (and getting people to spend money on merchandise relating to that). Next year will be all about the 50th Anniversary (and getting people to spend money on merchandise related to that).

That way he gets to have his cake and eat it too. I think it is a smart move.

Why would the NFL care whether we celebrate 50 seasons this year? I'm very skeptical of this claim, but stranger things have happened.

I've been wrong before, but until I see some hard evidence of this, I remain unconvinced that the NFL is "prohibiting" the Cowboys from celebrating 50 seasons this year.

Q: Are the Cowboys going to celebrate their 50th anniversary this season? Or did they forget about this historic milestone? Hopefully, they will at least have a patch, because if they don't, they will be the only team that is having their 50th that is not.

Don Armstrong

TAYLOR: I spoke to Rich Dalrymple, the Cowboys' PR director, and he said the club is celebrating its new stadium this year. It will celebrate its 50th anniversary next season, after it has completed 50 years of play.

If you want to let Mr. Dalrymple know how you feel about this decision, you can write him at:

 It seems to me very strange and unfair . It doesn't make sense to celebrate one year later the anniversary despite the other teams celebrate now the 50th season

It's a business decision. A lame one, but one nonetheless.

Prohibiting is a strong word. But Dallas celebrating in the same year as the AFL would promote some "confusion" and dilute the NFL's marketing push for the AFL campaign. It is pretty strong with throwbacks and a significant apparel push.

Interestingly enough, Dallas was awarded a franchise days before Oakland was. It wouldn't be so quick to place the onus solely on Jerry Jones. If there is a dime to be made, he would do it even if it infringed on the celebration of his new stadium. Also note that the Vikings aren't pushing a big celebration either and they too started in 1960. Check out their splash page of their website. More Favre than anything about fifty years of Viking football.

He's never been that big into team tradition unless it involves him or the team after he bought it, so this shouldn't be a surprise. If the NFL did suggest it wasn't a good idea, I doubt he would have put up a huge struggle. And since most of the time quite a few say "he's the owner, it is his team, he can do what he wants" it is surprising to see that sentiment change simply because of semantics. Technically, next year would complete our fifty years of football since we began competing in the fall of 1960.

I know this issue has sparked a lot of debate, but if you think about it, it all comes down to exactly what are we celebrating?

Are we celebrating the 50th season of Cowboys football or are we celebrating the 50th anniversary of the franchise's founding?

If we are celebrating the 50th season then this year is the year to celebrate, but if we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the franchise's founding then next year is the year for that.

If you look at it like a wedding anniversary, a 50th wedding anniversary is celebrated at the beginning of the 51st year of the marriage. That's simply the way it's done.

The Vikings started in 1961. They didn't play a single game in 1960. Dallas was the 13th NFL team. Vikings became #14 in 1961.

I can't figure out why people need to play semantics with the wording.

We celebrated 25 years in 1984. It was called the Silver Anniversary. Add 25 to 1984. What year does it make it for 50 years?

This is year 50 of the Cowboys. It isn't being celebrated but 8 other teams, all original AFL teams, who got their start the exact same season, are.

After completing 50 years, huh?

All you married gentlemen need to try this with your wives and tell me how it works out.
:laugh2:

Actually that's exactly what wedding anniversaries are all about. You don't celebrate your first anniversary until you've been married for one year. And you don't celebrate your 50th anniversary until you've been married for 50 years.

I agree. It is a matter of semantics.

I can say I'd honestly prefer it not getting wrapped up with the stadium and especially intermixed with the AFL. So it is "technically" fifty one. It is not worth getting excited about.

You said it here though. This is an AFL celebration, that tradition and history.

So you would honestly blame Jerry Jones for not wanting to be lumped in with that?

And again, I am not certain this was purely his choice.

And to add on to that, the NFL celebrated its 75th anniversary season in 1994, after being founded in 1920.

Honestly, I think the precedent has been set so the Cowboys should commemorate it this season. But whoever attached the word "anniversary" to "season" is just dumb.

But we agreed to wear throwbacks against KC and Oakland this year (who will also be wearing throwbacks), so we so are lumped in with them in some way. I think this has everything to do with the stadium and nothing to do with the AFL.
