Older veterans getting cut are discovering the "double edge sword" of free agency and the salary cap. These days, players are not competing against each other in terms of which one offers more to a team. Instead, they are competing against their own contract and whether it is perceived as equitable in terms of their productivity.
The mindset of a veteran is that the contracted amount of their salary should constantly increase because their previous contributions are cumulative...which they are not. Realistically, both sides are speculating on "futures",an investment type based on an analysis of their productivity in years to come. Veterans would have longer careers if they realized this and kept their ego in check.
Clearly, it was thought that these recent seasons would define Dez's career as a top 3 receiver, if not #1.and a future Hall of Famer. Dez has not been helped by the recent change at QB but his greatest liability was in his own hands, if you will pardon the pun.
Teams that win championships do so because they have the great fortune of possessing a type of player that answers when destiny knocks. That is, when the defining moment of victory or defeat appears in critical level games, they refuse to accept nothing but victory....they make "The Play"..
Michael Irvin #88 was one of those guys, there is a reason he was allowed to use the title "Playmaker".Go back to the early 90's, particularly the playoffs, and time after time, he was there in that "must have" 3rd down play. He was absolutely consistent. That level of confidence in a receiver does not exist for Dez Bryant, and that is on him. He looses focus, he is sloppy, he is selfish and sometimes immature.
It was said of Drew Pearson #88, that he was the consummate professional, he demanded perfection out of himself when it came to running routes. He would use a measuring tape to determine his distance from the sideline or a specific point on the field. He made his cuts like a surgeon. His quarterbacks knew precisely where he would be at all times. He was a student of the game. Dez Bryant is not.
Dez is far more physically gifted than the previous two #88's even in their own times. However, he has been a disappointment to the legacy of their jersey number and he has not earned the salaries of his current contract. A pay cut is in order but Dez will never understand how this may actually benefit him when all is said and done. Championships typically earn a player larger salaries for the rest of his life, long after his playing days are over. Dez's current salary is most likely spent and will be gone forever.
