If the Chargers look outside the organization to replace Wade Phillips, ex-Bills and Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell could be a candidate.

Cottrell, 59, knows the 3-4 defense San Diego will maintain. He's also been mentioned as a possible successor for Mike Zimmer in Dallas.

Yes, then he stopped being one because his defenses stunk and he never makes adjustments. This guy is the king of playing his corners off. He's all about not giving up the big play. I believe most of us, even people like me who aren't excited over the Phillips hiring, are expecting a much more aggressive defense. Cottrell is the absolute opposite of that. Trust me, I know a lot about Cottrell and you guys don't want him anywhere near this team. The threads complaining about him during the season would break an all-time record. He's an awful coach. He's so bad that after hearing his name mentioned, the Cowboys could now hire anyone else to be the defensive coordinator and I will rejoice just because it's not Cottrell.

I'm thinking the front runner is Bowles.

It's Wade's defense anyway. Bowles has the opportunity to pick up valuable experience.

I think that would be the best and most logical option myself.

Cowboys DBs coach Todd Bowles is scheduled to meet Jerry Jones on Friday, presumably to discuss the team's defensive coordinator vacancy.

Ex-Bills coordinator Ted Cottrell could become a candidate, says the Dallas Morning News, but Bowles is considered the early frontrunner.

So was Wade Phillips.
Actually he was never fired with good reason, he had winning teams with mediocre rosters on both occasions.

Todd Bowles has payed his dues and deserves a shot to coordinate the defense, his ideas mixed with Phillips' could prove to be a wonderfully potent concoction. The players like and respect Bowles greatly and so does Jerry and the departed Coach Parcells.

Is there a Rooney Rule for coordinators?

Even if there was, I do believe that Bowles would satisfy the requirement...

just like Sparano was interviewed for the HC job, and will have a great say in how the O is run, Bowles was interviewed also, and will be DC IMO, Jerry thinks highly of him

I think he was Wade's coordinator all 3 yrs he was in Buffalo wasnt he? Buffalo's defense was pretty good

besides, it doesnt really matter who the "coordinator" is, Phillips is going to be all over the defense...especially this yr...I wont be surprised if he calls the defenses himself...in fact I think he even said something about that didnt he?
