DANA POINT, Calif. -- In a fortuitous bit of corporate synergy, the NFL and ESPN Sports Poll collaborated on a study to determine the nation's most popular individual pro sports franchises.

Owners and team executives viewed the results of the poll this week during their opening gathering at the St. Regis Hotel. NFL teams captured six of the top 10 spots in the poll, including the Black and Blue's own Green Bay Packers at No. 2.

By one measure, the poll means that in 2008, the Packers had the second-highest percentage of supporters among all U.S. pro sports franchises.

"We're a very recognizable brand and I think we still have a national following," Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy said. Here's the full list for 2008:

1. Dallas Cowboys
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
4. New England Patriots
5. New York Yankees
6. Los Angeles Lakers
7. Indianapolis Colts
8. Boston Red Sox
9. New York Giants
10. Atlanta Braves
-----------------------------------------

If there was ever any doubt about who America's Team is...

Or what America's Sport is. Six of the top 10 are NFL teams.

But rest assured, at some point next year, there will be several discussions on, "ARE THE COWBOYS STILL AMERICA'S TEAM!?!?!?" in the media. It's just the haters' way.

Im actually shocked Green Bay is that high. I know they have alot of fans outside of Wisconsin, but damn.

They'll probably fall off next year once the Favre fever and A-Rod Pt. 2 interest cools off for good.

Every year someone shows up here and tries to claim that title. Funny how the "new Americas team" from a few years ago (the Aints) ain't even on the list :lmao2:

Imagine how popular they would be if they had won a playoff game in the past 10 years.

It is nice to see that my Lakers are on the list but the stinking Celtics aren't!!!

The Cowboys are, and will always be, America's Team. Those other wannabes need to get used to it.

There was a poll a few years back that questioned Packer faithful backgrounds, and the poll showed that most Packer fans outside of Wisconsin were once Wisconsinites who were either born in or raised in Wisconsin and relocated. The poll also showed that Green Bay's fan base, although always quite large, grew by leaps and bounds after Favre arrived. The respect and admiration that followed Favre nationally increased the Packers fanbase tenfold.

I'm surprised the Yankees are not #2.

There's a lot fewer baseball fans than there used to be. It is clear that football is the most popular sport in the U.S. by a very wide margin.

I never had any doubt about this. People can try and lay claim to the title, they can debate it, they can cry and whine about it, but it's clear, and always has been, that the Cowboys are Americas Team and it's never going to change.

I'm surprised the Yankees are #5. I would love to rub that in my wife's face, but I won't. :laugh2:

The Yankees aren't number five, they're number one in baseball. :)

Actually, the popularity of the NFL is mind boggling. DirecTV just signed a deal with the nfl....billion dollars per...AND the money is GUARANTEED even if they don't play in 2010.

Baseball is far behind the NFL...so the ranking doesn't surprise me.

It must be heavy on the Favre side cause Wisconsin's not that big to have that much of an affect.

Same here. I figured the top 5 would look something like this:
Cowboys
Yankees
Steelers
Lakers
Red Sox
But, being as this was a study conducted by the NFL & ESPN, I'm not shocked that it's dominated by NFL teams!

I have a few buddies that are Steeler fans and they insisted to me that THEY were America's team now because they have 6 while we have 5. I didn't let up an inch! Now I can show this to them and finally shut them up! Not even #2... hilarious!

If we could somehow manage to get into the Super Bowl, we would be up in un-reachable status.
