Today there would have been a penalty, but the play would have been blown dead at that spot too as soon as the helmet came off.
Back then they still looked at that as incidental contact as part of the play. As it was not a malicious intent or hit and not the QB.

That's a textbook definition of a "helmet to helmet" hit, a flag was thrown, yet the refs come back and say there is no penalty on the play. I'm sorry, but these guys are tainted.

Aside from the brief blips of above .500 football, I could not tell one year from another.

That is the saddest part. We had a QB for that entire stretch and did not capitalize.
