Today there would have been a penalty, but the play would have been blown dead at that spot too as soon as the helmet came off.
Back then they still looked at that as incidental contact as part of the play. As it was not a malicious intent or hit and not the QB.

It was definitely one of those moments that when you saw the play unfold you knew it was a special play that you would never forget. Here we are, 10 years later, and I still remember it.

Where is the time going folks?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Still amazing there was no penalty on this play.

That was back before the concussion lawsuits. I would expect it would be a focus if it happened now. Let alone the play would be called dead where his helmet flew off.

The Garrett years have all blended together for me.

Aside from the brief blips of above .500 football, I could not tell one year from another.

That is the saddest part. We had a QB for that entire stretch and did not capitalize.
