Cowboys owner: Pacman trade talks have "no energy"
By JIM WYATT • Staff Writer • April 16, 2008

Speaking to Dallas-area reporters, Jones said his team right now is more concerned with the draft than the suspended TItans cornerback.

"There's really no change in that status at all. There has been no movement. We've been focused, as well as I'm sure the Titans have been focused on this draft,'' Jones said. "I thought maybe we might get something done at our league meetings (earlier this month). We didn't, and when we didn't I knew this thing probably may or may not come about."

The Titans and Cowboys remain within striking distance of reaching a deal. They are close to agreeing on draft picks the Titans would receive from the Cowboys
- the Titans are seeking a fourth-round pick this year and a conditioning pick in 2009 that could be a fifth-rounder -- but the Titans remain firm to be reimbursed for some of the bonus money they've already paid Jones.

Contrary to reports, the Cowboys have not increased their offer in the last week, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Indications are both sides remain interested in making a deal before the April 26-27 NFL Draft, but Jones said Wednesday the two sides have not made any progress since the owners meetings in Florida at the beginning of the month.

"In the nature of doing something that is productive, we haven't talked to them since the league meetings,'' Jones said of the Titans.

"It’s a convoluted type of trade and … if you look at it, to me it’s just pretty much floating out there and there's really not much energy or activity around it right now. So I'd say it's kind of at that point. I don't want to say that it's dead, but I used the term 'it has no energy.’

“If timing is right for Tennessee, possibly we can re-energize it. Right now, it's kind of in limbo."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was in Dallas attending the SMU Athletic Forum luncheon, told reporters he doesn’t plan on addressing Jones’ possible reinstatement until around training camp.

Jones and his representatives have talked about filing for reinstatement if he’s traded, but Goodell sounded like it wasn’t an option now.

“I have already said to (Pacman) very clearly and his people that I will consider it before training camp,’’ Goodell told reporters.

“If he continues to conduct himself in a way that I think represents the NFL positively, I will consider reinstating him before the season.’’

Asked if he’s confident Pacman Jones will be reinstated, Jerry Jones said he has doubts.

"I'm not. I'm not at all (confident),’’ Jones said. “I wouldn't be presumptuous enough to advance what the commissioner might do. But it's going to take more than just talk for Adam to get on the field. But he's got a lot of resolve, as he would. I know how I'd feel if I was outside the NFL and I really wanted to get in. I think all that's got to happen and it just makes us and everyone else involved here have to go on and not hang your hat one way or the other on the transaction."

Jerry's rightly drawn his line in the sand.

He's made his best offer.

We'll see if the Titans take it or gamble and lose it all.

this isnt just directed at you...whats the hurry? why does everyone get so upset over it? If it happens great, if not no biggie....we arnt preparing to play a game in the next week or so...

hell if the deal didnt go down until sometime in TC or preseason, that'd be fine too

the only reason to get the deal done before the draft is so they alleviate the pressure of drafting for need in the 1st rd...it gives them more options

I think it's in both teams' best interests to get the deal done by (or during) the draft.

Tennessee then gets compensation this year, and the Cowboys would have a better handle on what they have and what they need.

And again, from what Jones is and should be saying, trading for Jones won't effect what they do in the draft, nor should it.

Anything he could or would bring should be considered a bonus, not something to be counted on.

This is all posturing. Jerry is talking this way to keep the price down for Pacman.

and the price totally goes down the crapper if we use a 1st rd pick on a CB

Jerry is in no hurry to do the deal if its not a good deal for the Cowboys. It's likely to happen at some point, probably on draft day.

yep

he's saying it for show, but he doesnt mean it...there's absolutely no reason for us to do the deal before the draft if it truly has no effect on our draft plan...I think they want him before hand so they can have more options...liek I said whe I heard about this the first time: trade for Pac Trash= 1st rd picks used on something other than CB

Anything he could or would bring should be considered a bonus, not something to be counted on.

and despite the public comments otherwise by Jones and Goodell, if we are really trading something concrete for AJ, then they have a good idea he's being reinstated...they must be fairly sure he's gonna be there

otherwise there's no reason to do the deal beforehand...we gain more leverage by waiting...once we use our 1st rd pick on a CB (either one) the need for Jones just isnt that great...the longer they wait, the lower the price goes...thats why I dont believe the trade has no effect on the draft plans

Just wondering if you get the same feeling that I do:

To me, the 2008 Cowboys draft strikes me as the most 'fluid' I can ever remember.

I think the reason why all of these 'scenarios' are floating around is that there is an element of truth to all of them.

Meaning that I could see the Cowboys trading both #1's for McFadden if the opportunity presented itself.

I could also see them taking a player at #22 and trading #28 for a veteran wideout if that opportunity presented itself.

Or I could see them trading down for more picks as well.

I think that the Cowboys aren't locked-in to any players or picks and are keeping all options open.

about the only things I'm sure of are:

1) we wont take a QB in the first rd

2) we wont take a TE in the 1st rd

3) we wont draft a kicker or punter in any round

4) they wont use both 1st rd picks on CB's (as some seem to think)

anything other than those things is probably a possibility

100% correct.

Here is the deal fellas, if there is no trade before the draft then pick #22 is going to be a CB. I know it, you know it, and the other 31 teams in the NFL know it.

Once that happens, the Titans are screwed because we really dont need Pac at that point. They know it and we know it, that is why if there is going to be a trade it is going to happen before the draft.

If there is no trade before the draft starts, this thing is dead in the water. We will wait for Pac's release to sign him in the summer.

Cowboys owner puts draft ahead of Pacman trade
By JIM WYATT • Staff Writer • April 17, 2008

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday said he has doubts about whether Pacman Jones will be reinstated by the NFL, while also throwing cold water on reports of heated trade talks between the two teams in recent days.

Speaking to Dallas-area reporters, Jones said his team right now is more concerned with the draft than the suspended Titans cornerback.

Look guys the titans don't really have to do anything until goodell reinstates pacman. They dont have to pay him a dime while on suspension, so right now the titans are in no rush to deal him. When the titans have to start paying him then will see movement, until then were at a stalemate.
