Terence Newman should return every punt

The man averaged 13.3 yards per return on 3 tries and always looks like he is one missed tackle away from taking it to the house. He was one of the best return men in college football history, and the way he returns reminds me the way Deion used to do it. He needs to keep that job, permanently.

I knew he'd be a factor in the return game this week, especially with Rector injured. That's why I posted the question last week about what people thought about the risk/reward of using T-New as a return man.

I'm glad they decided to go for it. He is very natural with it, and reminds me a lot of Deion.

I like the way newman goes north, unlike crayton who does to much dancing.
He was on the verge of breaking a couple last night.

Except for the flashy attitude, everything about Newman kinda reminds me of Deion.. His thin legs, that smallish looking frame, quick feet, the way they stand and line up to cover... It's freaky.

It was fun to see him get to do it a few times, but it is playing with fire. I wouldn't want to trot him out there every single time for risk of injury. Putting him out there 2-3 times a game when the opposition is punting inside their own 30, I could live with that.

my feelings exactly.........you can get hurt at any given moment..but returning kicks increases the odds tenfold.

This risk of injury is way overblown.
The PR is a very important part of the team.
Put him out there. Period.
BTW-Newman is a strong dude. Don't think of him as weak and slight.

Tell that to Jason Sehorn. He was never the same after his injury and he was around 215 and as strong as a corner as there was in the NFL.

Deion is 6'1" while Newman is 5'11" and Deion was much faster than Newman. I do see how he does run a little like Deion, but thats it.

I like TNew, but he's no Deion.

Now, I have been saying it every since we drafted TNew, that he should be returning kicks. Few returners are injuried while returning. We drafted him touting his return skills, yet we don't use him for that. That is what we said was the difference between him and the other CBs coming out that year.

And his other knock, his age, was supposed to be balanced by those return skills. We just plain have to use him there.

I don't know the stats on punt return injuries, but I'd be really scared because he's so important to our defense. I like how we do it now where he'll return it in key situations. Put him in there in the second half of one possesion games, don't risk it otherwise.

That was on a kickoff return, not a punt.

We can always use an explosive return.

good point. I'm not sure how to rephrase it. but i think there are times when you just need to make sure you fair catch the ball or hold on and not worry about the big return. For instance if you are going to be pinned deep

this is one area of our team that BP has failed beyond belief, all the emphasis on Special teams, all the late round draft picks going all the way back to Woody Danzler, and of course this year in Skylar Green, he still continues to fail at PR, i personally thought Reggie Swinton was a good punt returner. will see how the Jamaica Rector experiment goes.

Crayton carries the ball around like a loaf of bread when he isn't fair catching. If he is the punt returner, I figure he will fumble one this year.

Amen...he's the only guy who actually has any quickness and speed...however, I am interested in seeing more of Rector there as well...anyone who can make the first guy or two miss can be a return man.
