Terrell Owens thinks he can still play

Terrell Owens has not played a down of professional football in three years, but he still hasn’t given up hope that he will one day be able to return to the NFL. Owens, who is now 40 years old, still believes he can play at a high level and he believes his resume should be enough to get him that opportunity.

“No doubt there’s not a question that I can still play,” Owens said, via the Associated Press. “But perception, media portrayal is so negative. Any time there’s a rumor that a team is interested in bringing me in, there’s all this media attention, and the negative things they have to say are more than the positives.

“It’s not about what I can bring to them. It’s about stuff I did five, 10 years ago.”

Owens is a future Hall of Famer and there is no doubt that he has always been a fitness freak. So while some may wonder just how good of shape he has kept himself in, he believes that he is no different than five years ago.

“They brought up my age when I was 35, 36 and I’m still in just as good shape as I was then,” Owens said. “Jerry [Rice] played until he was 42. At 39, I ran a 4.43 40-yard dash. You look at the number of dropped balls and the way guys are playing now and you can’t honestly say I can’t do better.”

So each team has what, .. 4 or 5 receivers?
So at least 128 receivers?

They are not all better than Owens. He is probably right.

Not all of those guys are going to be competing with him. Some of them are bottom roster guys who'd get paid less and who you're keeping on your roster to develop long-term.

There are probably only 45-50 positions that Owens might actually be considered for, and there are probably pretty close to that many WRs who can outplay him on the planet right now. Factor in his disastrous narcissism, and I can't imagine anybody seriously considering him at this point. I wouldn't, at least.

I'm not suggesting that anyone will pick him up, .. only that I think he is still better than some kids that are out there on NFL rosters.

I'm seeing fewer and fewer all of the time that show me that they are in it for the love of the game.

It's all about money, endorsements, making a name, showing off, etc.

I wonder how long TO would have played if he had been low-maintenance? The Cowboys would not have dumped him. My guess is he would have played at least two more years.

Sad, but instructive story that it pays to fit in.

The other tragedy about TO is over his career he made and LOST over $80m.

I think most of us think they could have hung on to at least $20m...

He really didnt even have to be that low maintenance, the league is full a narcissistic prima donnas. His problem was dividing the locker room when he didnt get his way. With his talent he would probably still be in the league pulling down the big money but all the talent in the world is not worth it if your tearing the rest of the team down.

He couldn't hack it in the Arena league. His last NFL stop was Seattle, and they cut him in the offseason. He had the worst case of alligator arms he has ever had. He is a physical specimen, but mentally, he isn't all there.

Agreed - I really meant the way he divided teams when he didn't get his way.

Mick Jagger and the Stones also think they're still great but they're just as delusional.

I love analogies, .. but find another one. That one doesn't work here.

They are the Rolling Stones.

Love'em or hate'em, they are the Rolling Stones.

And they still suck compared to where they used to be. I couldn't be paid to watch the Stones play now.
