Testaverde back with Belichick, to join Pats
(Nov. 14, 2006) -- Bill Belichick and Vinny Testaverde are being reunited for the third time in their career in their third different city together.
They worked together in Cleveland from 1993-'95, again in New York with the Jets from 1998-'99, and now in New England.
With the roster spot created when New England placed offensive lineman Billy Yates on injured reserve, the Patriots signed Testaverde, who turned 43 on Monday. Testaverde will be at practice Wednesday and in uniform for Sunday's game.
Up until now the Patriots had been carrying two quarterbacks on their roster, Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. Last year they carried three with the veteran Doug Flutie. Nothing is thought to be wrong with Brady or Cassel, so all kinds of theories will exist as to why Belichick signed Testaverde now. But the two have always been close; Belichick once benched the popular starting quarterback Bernie Kosar in Cleveland in favor of Testaverde.
This time, maybe Belichick wanted sideline help, maybe he wanted to give Testaverde one more chance at a playoff run and ring, and maybe he just thinks Testaverde's presence will be a bonus for the Patriots.
But slowly, this is turning into the year of the geriatric comeback. Earlier this season, the Atlanta Falcons brought back 46-year-old kicker Morten Andersen, and now Testaverde has made his way back into the league.

seriously though, I'm not surprised. They had Doug Flutie last year. Maybe Vinny can teach Matt Cassel a thing or two.

Hey Patriots fans, enjoy the Church of Vinny guys. Tell The Major I said hello.
wow. That's just mindblowing. I love Vinny as much as anyone, but for some Pats fans to suggest he's anything other catastrophic insurance is ridiculous.LaTunaNostra;1163673 said:Too funny.
But not as funny as the reaction up here when for the first time in an elephant's memory, the Pats lost two consecutive games. There's a whole generation now of 'spoiled' fans. sigh.
I kid you not, I heard on local sports radio from an irate an that if Tom doesn't get his act together, he should be benched for Vinnie T.
I did NOT hear the word 'press' connected to bench, so I am sure I heard right.
And of course, it's been 'bring flutie' back in some quarters since the Pats-Indy loss. Bledsoe's return has also been mentioned, with some lamenting of the passed trade deadline.
Just goes to show..tho winning does NOT increase a fanbases' collective IQ, losing rapidly saps it.
Anyone who thinks Tom Brady ought to sit in favor of Vinny is certifiably insane.LaTunaNostra;1163673 said:Too funny.
