TEXANS CUT DAVE AND DOMANICK
A year ago, the Houston Texans passed on quarterback Vince Young and running back Reggie Bush with the first overall pick in the draft because quarterback David Carr and running back Domanick Davis were the franchise's choices at those positions for 2006 and, presumably, beyond.
A year later, none of the four players in question are under contract with the Texans.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Texans have cut Carr and Davis (who is now known as Domanick Williams).
It is, in our view, a stunning turn of events. Carr was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, and Williams/Davis was regarded not long ago as a rising star after rushing for more than 1,000 in each of his first two NFL seasons.
Williams/Davis missed all of the 2006 season due to a knee injury, and Carr was generally ineffective in 2006, despite leading the league for a while in passer rating.
Carr's fate was sealed when the team traded for quarterback Matt Schaub and named him the starter. But the Texans were expected to at least trade him for a low-round draft pick.
The team paid an $8 million option bonus not long after the 2005 season ended to secure the rights to Carr for three more seasons. The decision to keep Carr took them out of the running for Young, a Houston native who won the NFL offensive rookie of the year award and who became the first rookie quarterback to play in a Pro Bowl.

Interesting.

I find it hard to believe they couldn't trade either one for something.

I would definately bring Carr in, and I would have much rather had him than Brad Johnson.

I still think he's worth a look. His line wasn't exactly the greatest.

I wouldn't consider him a franchise QB, but he could come in and win a team a few games.

I agree completely, but it will not happen.

There are far worse starters than Carr for many teams. He'll find a starting job somewhere.

I'd bring him in as well. Further, I'd keep Johnson. Probably take a good year for Carr's ears to stop ringing from the pounding he's taken in Houston.

I think OAK would be a nice landing spot. Draft Calvin no. 1, and spend the rest of the draft trying to fortify that O-Line.

If I were him, I would never consider signing with Oakland. Why in the world would this kid want to go to the only franchise in the league where he could get sacked more then he did in Houston? For Oakland, that might be OK but for Carr, that would be stupid IMO.

If I was Carr, I'd rather go somewhere as a backup than go to a team that has a worse OL than Houston.

I don't. The Texans had no leverage with either guy. Teams know they don't want to keep them. They can just wait and compete with other interested teams(if any) to sign them if really interested. A buyers market I guess for both of them. There is talk that Williams may not ever play again.

I do think Carr is worth a look at for the right price. Heck, so is Williams if healthy. Both would be solid 3rd stringers especially if Williams is healthy.

[SIZE=-1]Well, I have not been here for a while. Thought I would stop for a minute and throw my two cents into this discussion. Do you remember a guy called Jim Plunkett?? As top notch football fans I know you do.

I guess my point being is, I only saw this guy play a few times on TV, but he seemed like a pretty good QB. Perhaps his problem is that he is surrounded by bums. There is no QB, no matter how good they are that can win without some talent around them. At least a halfway good OL, a good running back to offset the pass-run offense, and some decent WR's. Plus coaching is critical. Do you know how to use this guy.

When we drafted Plunkett, the poor guy got killed because we didn't have the talent around him. In fact, the Pats were the joke of the league -- and they earned that title. Well, Plunkett went off to the Raiders and the SB.

The Pats have no need for a QB, but I feel that this kid may make it under the right circumstances somewhere else. We have no need for a QB, but Cassel may not be THE backup QB.

Quite frankly I think the Texans have made one of the worst draft choices last year passing on Bush. In my humble opinion, I have never seen one guy make such a difference in a team as Bush has done with the Saints. How could they have passed on that guy??? Flat out dumb.

So too bad that you picked up Johnson. If the Texans had released Carr sooner I believe for you it would have been a better choice. Good luck to him, and sorry for any player having to play for the Texans.

The Texans should have gone O-line with every pick last season. Maybe even tried harder to trade down and pick up more lineman. The Jets got better by picking up two good young offensive linemen last season. Houston could have done the same thing.

Davis/Williams' career is most likely over. His knee isn't better with a year and half of rest.

If it was my choice, it would have been Bush. Pick up the OL further in the draft. Darn that kid is good.

Im pretty sure he's gonna wanna go somewhere where he can start. Why would he want to settle for a backup position this early in his career?

I can't think of anywhere else he'd be guaranteed a starting position.
