The eighth overall draft pick and the two second-round choices the Falcons received from Houston in exchange for backup quarterback Matt Schaub on Thursday likely will be used to address several needs, not to trade up to land Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
-- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

if so this is one of the stupidest moves ever. maybe even more stupid then passing on reggie bush, and matt leinart, vince young

They switched 1st round with Atlanta, they now have the 10th pick in round 1.

ok, and they gave up 2 2nds? still too much. i thought when the story broke they said for a 2nd. thought that was good enough. or atleast good dealing by the texans GM.

yea that doesn't really matter because the guy they probably want is levi brown and they can take him at 10.

It is too much.

Quinn or Russell might have fallen within their range with them sitting at 8. Or they could have used the 2nd for a QB.

They passed on Bush.

Quite honestly they are a ship without a rudder.

lol yup. only thing funnier is the whole texans organization unwilling to admit they messed up. saying " they got the guy that was best fit for their team"

I feel bad for David Carr. They did nothing to invest in his success. Looks like the Dolphins are asking what it will take to acquire him.

Texans Give:
#8 (1,400)
#39 (510)
2008 2nd Rounder (valued as a 2007 3rd rounder: 230)

Falcons Give
#10 (1,300)
Matt Schaub

So Schaub's value is 840 (2140 minus 1300), which is about the 20th pick in this year's draft.

I think Carr could have been a productive QB if Houston would have nurtured him properly. The guy is shellshocked and needs a decent line and decent WR's to flourish. I don't know what the cost would be but someone might get a steal with Carr.

yeah, if they dont do seomthing for schaub he wont have any success either. he isnt better then david carr. the dolphins have a decent OL. im willing to bet carr would have success there.

They gave up alot, but I'm thinking they didn't want to go completely back to square one with a rookie QB. With a fan base that's ready to win more than they lose, it's hard to tell them that we're gonna start all over again and not with the guy you all wanted last year. Bob McNair is quoted with saying that last year was a mistake...not so much with choosing Mario over Vince, but picking up the 8m option bonus on Carr.

So at least with Schaub, he's a guy who's been in the NFL, who's got some skins, albeit preseason, on the wall. It's the same type of thing w/Romo. Folks were skeptical of Romo, because he hadn't thrown his first NFL TD, he hadn't played in a real game. He hadn't done alot of things until the Giants game. It was quite a gamble for the 'boys to turn to him. So now the Texans are taking a similar gamble.

And I was reading something also that the Raiders were after Schaub as well, so that's why the Texans gave up that extra 2nd.

That seems like a fair deal to me in these terms. Schaub will be fine in the WCO and the drop down of two picks is not going to keep them from still getting a top tier guy. They have made some bad moves no doubt, but this is not one.

Indeed. I think it's a pretty even trade. The question becomes, do you think Schaub would be rated as the 3rd QB in this draft and worthy of a pick around the 20s. I haven't really watched him much, but with the hype the guy has I can't see that it would be wholly irrational for Houston to do this.

Its not the trading down that hurts them so much its the giving up of two second round picks, in the second round you can select solid offensive line prospects like they did last year with eric winston (OT Miami) they desperately need help on the offensive line and this will hurt the Texans and Shaub alot.

They have Winston...can take Brown now at 10, so while I can see where you are coming from they got the QB they felt is the guy to lead them forward.

Based on point totals of the draft value chart, I think the Texans basically gave up the equivalent of the 19-20th pick in the draft for Schaub.

(Oops, theogt beat me too it)

I'll also say, I don't think Schaub will be that much better than Carr.

Umm, no. Carr is far more mobile than Schaub, which doesn't bode well for his future behind that o-line.

I don't ever remember a 20th pick getting a 6 year, $48 Million contract though.
