Patient Texans strike deal with Sherman

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak cannot wait to show off his new staff today, and quarterback Tim Couch, the top overall pick in the 1999 draft, no doubt can't wait to do a little showing off of his own.

On the day the Texans finalized a three-year deal to make Mike Sherman assistant head coach/offense, the organization also joined the list of teams planning to grant a workout to Couch, said an NFL official with knowledge of the situation.

Couch, the first pick of the expansion Cleveland Browns, has played in 62 NFL games, none the past two seasons while he's struggled to recover from rotator cuff surgery.

It's unclear when Couch, 28, will work out for the Texans, but worth noting the team made a major commitment to incumbent David Carr, exercising an $8 million option last week.

As for Sherman, the former Green Bay Packers head coach will be introduced, along with the rest of Kubiak's staff, at a news conference today.

"There are other teams that would have liked to have him," Kubiak said. "We gave him some time, and we're really pleased that he's with us, because he's one heck of a coach."

"We stressed patience. Some teams panic when they don't get somebody right away. But we didn't, and it paid off with some real good coaches."

Sherman, who pursued other head coaching jobs before accepting Kubiak's offer, spent six seasons in Green Bay, leading the Packers to a 53-27 record.
